Worried Purchaser of Sept 2006 Vantage
Discussion
I have just put a small deposit down on a sept 2006 vantage with 6100 miles in tungston silver. Whilst excited I am very worried that the vehicle is going to be a problem. I have just read an article that said that even though hand built the build quality is poor with all sorts of problems. My nearest AM dealer is 3 hours drive away. SHOULD i buy another porsche 911 4s (997) instead- I know they are reliable and fun to drive.
Could i have members comments urgently please
THank you

I've had three and think you'll be fine - I assume its a 2007 model year (new style seats, slightly different centre console)? You may expect a couple of niggles such as a rattle in the dash, squeeky brakes and sticky filler cap but nothing major. On the other hand, if you don't want any of those, my Sep 2006 (MY07) car is up for sale at 54k - take a look at the 'Lary or Lovely' thread below this one .... :-)
There are good cars out there and bad cars, just like ALL brands. Mine has been back to the dealer 3 times in 2.5 years, the three services, it is a bit of a shame as I have one of the best driving roads in the country between me and my dealer. Take a look at the history, if it has been backwards and forwards many times then avoid. I have just bought a 'highly reliable' beemer and it has been at the dealers 3 times in 4 weeks for various issues, so it can happen with any motor really.
Edited to add....my Aston has been more reliable than both my Porsches before hand.

I second what has been said here. A car which has been used regularly and this one seems to have been just that with 6000 miles on the clock tend to be very reliable. It is when they are not used that problems tend to occur. So I would, as you have clearly done, rather go for a high to medium mileage car than a low mileage car. Secondly, cars that have been well maintained have had all the niggles sorted out in the first 6-12 months of ownership so again check the logbook and make your due enquiries with the dealer.
As with jsadler, my DB9 has done 18.000 miles (MY05) and has never been to the dealer outside the 4 regular services that it has had since I bought it. On the contrary, the X5 of my wife has been so bad that I left it with the dealer and bought a RR instead which has been just great.

Reference to mileage is relative. However, it is very rare that you see Astons with more than 10.000 miles p.a on the clock. This will undoubtedly change as increasingly people start using them as daily drivers instead of the week-end car of which they are entirely capable in my opinion.
Mine shows very little wear inside the cabin and brake pads and one set of tires has been the only consumables over the last 3.5 years. Never have I needed to top up the oil between the annual services. If I leave it for more than two weeks I will connect the battery trickle charger which comes with the vehicle.

I drive an '07 V8V and clocked up nearly 25k miles. Apart from a squeaking belt fixed under warranty, not a single problem. You can't compare an Aston with any mass produced car, including a Porsche; it is a hand assembled machine which has a character all of its own. You may encounter a few niggles....but isn't that a small price to pay for such a great machine.
Would you turn Angelina Jolie down because she couldn't cook?..................Didn't think so.
You have done the right thing, enjoy the fun.

Dear Noble3r,
Thanks for your help. There was a small oil leak which was fixed, and all the disks were replaced under warranty because of some corrosion- I assume because of lack of use- seller only did 20 miles each week to take his wife out to dinner !!!

listen mate if it comes with a warranty then why all the worrying. Service costs and consumables aren't going to break the bank.
Go for it!!
John Austin, I think you can see from our responses that you really have nothing to worry about, as long as you have a warrenty in place. Please don't let a few minor niggles get in the way of owning and enjoying a great car and a piece of automotive art. Due to the nature of any forum, people will post questions about problems they have encountered and ask for guidance; that's the great thing about forums and guidance is in abundnace, this should be seen as a positive.
Maybe we should post at least ten great things about owning an Aston for every niggle we describe.
