Going to buy a DB9 Volante in the next few weeks and just done a search on Autotrader, there are 192 DB9's on there, 180 trade sales and only 12 private!! Why so many trade sales and so few private sales?

Generally 'cos private buyers prefer warranties for cars at this level. As for cars within warranty, I do think buyers feel safer buying from a dealer, although the logic isn't so clear to see.

Most buyers need finance and it's not as easy to finance a car brought privately.

Its as though when owners want to sell they sell to dealers rather than advertise the vehicle themselves. Whenever I've bought any of my previous cars, SL500 M3 XK8 996, private sellers compared to trade sellers has always been 50/50 60/40 or similar. I'm trying to buy a DB9 Volante at the moment and obviously trying to get a really good deal, credit crunch etc etc etc, but as there is so few private sellers its as though the dealers are operating some sort of cartel

Selling high value cars (unless the latest speculator special!!!) privately is a right royal pain have you tried it..

There is a mass of hassle... wasters, canvassers, feigned interest, test drivers & tyre kickers, silly trade bidders, private bids less than trade who don't understand the word reality, fraudsters, expensive adverts.. etc etc etc!

Bottom line is if you look after your car & work hard on best trade bid it isn't far off a private deal with zero hassle!

Frankly the same applies buying a DB9, with Aston dealers willing to negotiate whilst still offering peace of mind & back up I'd spend my time getting best deal from Am rather than trying to save a couple of grand on a private punt wink

I think you are right, I wouldnt consider buying a DB9 privately that was out of warranty, I would imagine its easy to spend a few grand if things go wrong!!!! I have contacted a few main dealers about cars at 89995 and a few seem willing to come down to about 85000 so I think I'll keep hassling a few dealers for a while yet.

I would not have any reservations about buying a DB9 from a private seller provided the car comes with a full service record a an extended warranty. I would be more concerned to buy from a dealer where the car has been parked for months rather than from a private seller who has cherished the car and used it.

ditto that. Why pay the margin to a dealer when you can share a bit with the previous owner?

There just aren't the private sellers there to deal with.

I've been thinking about placing a wanted ad to deal with that very issue.
- I.e. I want a DB9 but dont want to needlessly pay a dealer
margin (I dont want their services after all), especially if it benefits a PH'r.

I reckon it might work if the buyer agreed to pay a margin over trade in. Buyer would need to be specific about their wanted vehicle though and no fecking about wasting time. Its the time that's a killer.

There is a lot of SOR cars in dealerships at the moment alongside their own stock, with the credit crunch you really can get a fair deal from an official dealer like Cambridge Aston who are excellent!
Its worth a few grand extra for warranty, back up & peace of mind at this high price level IMO!

"I'm trying to buy a DB9 Volante at the moment and obviously trying to get a really good deal, credit crunch etc etc etc, but as there is so few private sellers its as though the dealers are operating some sort of cartel" I am not saying you would do this , but the thought of people ringing me up constantly telling me there is a credit crunch and fuel has gone through the roof, etc, etc so lets do a deal at £10k less would totally do my head in.

Also, if you sell your car privately do you really know who is coming round to your house to look at your Ferrari/Aston etc. Fancy getting wacked over the head? No thank you. I'd rather let the dealer get involved, lose a few shillings and have a quiet life. Regarding buying privately would you want to transfer £90k to somebody and then go to collect the car hopeing they are still there? What else could you do, go around with the cash? Maybe not...
