Changes in UK road tax mean that any car registered before 1st March 2001 will be significantly cheaper to own than any car registered after that date. By 2010 the difference in road tax will be £255 per annum. What, if anything does this mean to the relative desirability of comparable 2000/2001 DB7s (for example). As year becomes less important as cars age, the 2000 cars should be relatively more attractive.

I have had my 2000 DB7 for over 7 years now and commend this wise, albeit arbitrary and iniquitous, cut off point.

Depends on the value of the car. Will £255 mean much to someone who's spending 30k odd?

Obviously it will hit someone who's car is just the wrong side of the cut off date. But £255 is not going to counter the positives a car which is a couple of years newer and perhaps the current model.

As for it being a good idea, I think the government are pushing their luck. The vast majority of voters are motorists. How long before the get fedup of being the taxmans whipping boy.

I dont mind being taxed based on my environmental impact but it needs to be proportional and fair. Have a fair and honest review of the impact of everything we do and use, and then apply policies which work. If thats taxes fair enough. But I want them ring fenced, and thorough analysis and reports on the success of policies.

I'm guessing alot of the anti car brigade might not like the outcome though. Since reproducing would probably come top of the hit list, not 4 x 4's.

Saw a 2000 X plate DB7 Vantage with 25,000 ish miles on the other day for £27,000 in pretty much mint condition. Just seen a 2001 Vantage for £23,995 on Autotrader, 29,000 miles. Prices for DB7's are dropping...
