Hi
I’m looking at buying a 2+2 ‘GT’ style car for the rare occasions where I need a ‘smart’ motor. It’s never going to be the daily driver, so it’ll be lucky if it knocks up 2000+ miles in a year. On that basis I can’t see the value in having anything too expensive or depreciative just sitting in the garage doing nothing most of the time.

I’ve got the choice down to [another] Cerbera, a DB7 or a Maserati 3200. I’m well up-to-date with the foibles I’ll find in TVR-land, but have less knowledge of the perils of buying an older DB7 or Masser. I’m also asking this question in the Maserati forum, but for DB7s, looking at any of these cars what would be the pitfalls? Anyone know the cars? What would I be looking at for service costs at a real low mileage each year? Are they a DIY-able proposition for anything other than stamp-in-the-book services?

I must admit I really do fancy a V12, but I just can’t justify having £30K tied up in something I maybe only use a handful of days a year. But if there was a FSH ‘stellar mileage’ one at a decent price I could be tempted.....

All of the cars that you have quoted are i6 supercharged DB7's, the ones (in my opinion) to go for are the DB7 Vantages. The ones you have linked too are also very high mileage examples. A very good friend of mine owns a DB7 Vantage (V12) he says it is a beautiful car, he does similar mileage to you and has very little problems with it and servicing etc is pretty cheap, considering. But remember that if a car originally retailed for £100000 then it is still a £100000 car to run.

An old V8 Vantage would be a good car to look at too. Most of these have been owned by serious enthusiasts and looked after accordingly.

Lovely cars. The V12 is the one to have IMHO, if you can live with the costs.

Read the AMOC forum in the Bloxham section - there's a good guide to buying and running DB7s.

OTOH you can have an i6 for under UKP30k if you're so minded, with lower servicing costs. It's not quite as quick (unless you have it breathed on, to which it's alleged to respond very well smile) - but it's just as pretty. More so, in my view but YMMV.

Very true!

The I6 is prettier (though I'd install the vantage style grill that Chiltern offers) and cheaper to run. Almost as nice inside (the Vantage's interior mods really lift it). Almost as quick. The Vantage has better suspension (GT better still) for a bit of "press on" driving.

Ahh but the sound of that V12 in full flight (with sports exhaust...)

As they say - you pays your money and you makes your choice.
