Aston Hybrid On the Way?

Report: Aston looking to use Mercedes hybrid engines to combat emissions laws

Could the Rapide be the first Aston hybrid?
Could the Rapide be the first Aston hybrid?
Aston Martin is looking to Mercedes hybrid technology to get around increasing emissions laws, it has been reported.

Sports car manufacturers such as Porsche and Aston Martin are being forced to look at ways to lower the CO2 levels of their cars due to schemes like the new £25 Congestion Charge and new EU proposals.

Aston doesn’t have the financial clout to develop whole new powertrains and its own hybrid technology so it could now be looking to established manufacturers such as Mercedes for help.

In December PistonHeads reported that the two carmakers were in talks and the result could be that Aston uses not only the hybrid tech but also smaller V6 and V8 engines.

Last month Mercedes officials also reportedly visited Aston’s Gaydon facility.

The suggestion is that Aston would use hybrid technology as a boost for the smaller motors to up their power.

No, please, not Aston Martin. They're a national treasure and should be exempt from all this cock and bull.

With that head in the sand attitude, it is surprising you are not CEO of a major British automotive manufacturer?

Are you Ulrich Bez?

Get a grip people, AJ’s attitude is 100% correct!

All this st about emissions IS absolute cock and bull!

Car manufacturers know it too, why other than the engineering capabilities do you think there so against it?

Because this whole saga against CO2 emissions and fuel duties is all out of proportion and a load of bullst designed to make money out of the misinformed sheep that 90% of the country and world are!

In all fairness a volcano emits my c02 then the human race does in a whole year and since the earths magnetic field is 10% weaker than it was 100 ears ago the planet is going to be heating up if we were here or not. And c02 is not the only green house gas what are we doing to stop us emitting the rest of them? Just a bit of science there for you. smile

Everyone donate money to nuclear fusion research and it'll be fiiiiine.

Back to the car, what's wrong with hybrids? Electric engines have more torque than you can shake a stick at!

I wish we would stop concentrating on CO2 and look at all the other cr*p being chucked out into the atmosphere..
Any Diesel experts on here who would care to comment on all the 'nasties' that come out of the exhauast of a modern Diesel car?? Just cause their CO2 figure is low doesnt mean they are genuinely clean..

You only have to follow one when they stick their foot down to know that...

I agree about Aston's market place issue. If its direct competitors are doing it then it would be financial suicide not to follow suit. Sadly there are alot of people who believe that if they buy a hybrid car they are saving the world!! Complete c*ck but thats the sad state of affairs were in..

I think its the moral issue that stinks!! (no pun intented!!)
We should be dealing with facts about the environment. Not some political spin which just makes everyone feel guilty for breathing.. (sh!t even that emmits CO2)

If that were the case then the Merc officials would have been in Banbury, not Gaydon.

yeah but you wouldnt get the right exhaust note from a 'Nuclear Fusion Aston' wink

It may need more then a red start button, I think I would want to see some core temp gauges and blinken lights. That really would be 'Alternative' bring it on!

Don't get me started on this... CO2 is a relatively minor greenhouse gas (as the dominant greenhouse gas, water vapour is far more important than CO2) and over 90% of CO2 comes from natural sources beyond our control anyway. Atmospheric carbon dioxide levels (currently at around 350 parts per million) have been over 18 times higher in the past at a time when Aston Martins, factories and power stations did not even exist — levels rise and fall without mankind's help.

I don't deny global warming is happening (but this is not necessarily a bad thing - in fact a cooling earth would be far worse for mankind) and I think it's just plain common sense to try and conserve our reserves of fossil fuels - as one day they'll run out and we'd better have an alternative developed by then or we'll be really screwed. However, this idea that mankind is causing the warming and that reducing CO2 is what's needed to sort the problem is simply an gilt-edged means of governments extracting more tax revenue from us all.

What nobody in the press seem to mention is all the fossil fuels that get burnt to produce the electricity that powers these electric cars in the first place.

Havign said that, as long as the cars are fast, I don't care whther it's powered by petrol, diesel, electricity or smarties.

As much as we like Aston, the self appointed time wasters at the E.U. are introducing much tougher emission laws.

If they do not conform to the new regulations, eventually they will be illegal to sell, or expensive to the point where no-one buys them and AML goes out of business.

It is the right attitude if they want their business to be around in the future

Is'nt the charge somthing like £2500 for every car over the limit or something like that?

If your cars cost 80k + i'm sure another £2500 won't make a huge differance to be honest, even with hybrid teck there never going to get to the required levels, not unless they loose around 300hp and 4 odd litres

A fair point, well made. As a thought, what would we be doing if this were indeed the case? car manufacturers building 6 litre Ford Focuses? Would we be being advised to produce as much CO2 as is humanly possible to 'save the planet' and rewarded by tax deductions for doing so?

Would we b*ll*cks.

Back to the topic, Aston Martin are just doing what they need to do to survive, which should be a good thing for all of us as motoring enthusiasts. As long as they find a way to keep them sounding, going and looking as they do it could have a Moulinex under the bonnet.

It would be a travesty to lose such marques as Aston Martin, Lamborghini, Bentley, Rolls Royce, Ferrari et al to a myth.

Please don't think climate change, think energy security and $105/barrel oil prices.

I personally think this is a fantastic idea; absolutely reliable engines and subsystems, composite construction, older Astons that can be bought without the Interceptor nightmare - lovely to own, good value but impossible to take anywhere without LOTS of folding for fuel
