Which would you have and why?

On the basis that for similar money you could get an older Vanquish, slightly newer DB9 or a nearly new V8 it must be a difficult choice. For around £80-90k it's possible to get any of them.

I'm leaning towards the DB9...

Assuming you definitely stick to the same price...the AMV8 (in fact, I did!).

DB9 - don't need the extra "seats" and am amongst a seemingly small number who actually doesn't rate the way it looks. It looks too long to me, too much front overhang and I hate the front light clusters (it's the indicators) which make it look like Billy the Fish. It's also too heavy (or felt it to me - I guess the sport pack helps on the dynamics, but...).

Vanq - love them. Was so nearly tempted by a dk blue one. But at this age/price you just know you're going to have issues with the gearbox etc. And the interior looks a bit..."dated Ford". Rather than "up to date Ford" like the others biggrin

The V8 ticked the right boxes for me. Beautiful, sounds utterly awesome, goes well enough, handles tidily. And only 2 seats.

Will see what AM bring out in the next couple of years but may buy a VanqS next...love the brutality of it. Or may go for something pre-Virage.

The V8 is small, tight, 911 alternative. Great fun to drive.

The DB9 is a V12 automatic, long legged GT tourer and also very quick (a friend and I had a hoon with me in a Ford GT behind, the Aston was quite hard to catch!). A very different proposition to the V8 - Jaguar proportions, wee bit floaty in comparison, but a grown up car in comparison.

The Vanquish is the big, somewhat flawed, hand built monster. Manual box (no torque converter), the V12 is identical in performance to the DB9 - I actually think the DB9 feels a bit quicker. Looks the same (at a glance) as the 9, the cabin is not as good as the 9. I had a Vanquish and loved it - it's a 'moment' in AML's history and I had to have it - big, muscular, beautiful.

Unless you have particularly deep pockets and are under 35, get the V8.

Very hard to advise!

yes the Vanq, even the early ones are such awesome old brutes IMO, a real proper old skool hand built Aston in every way!
gearbox issues aan be a pain on earlier ones, my uncle's Vanquish suffered a fault in its system recently, but thankfully the car was quickly sorted and back out on the road not long safter
the dated bits are definetely part of the cars character, stil an awesome machine though IMO and very tempting now too!

If i used my head. A DB9, better built etc Auto box brilliant. Using my heart to choose, the Vanquish. Firstly the name, what a corker. More importantly for me is that the Vanquish is the last of the proper Aston's. Quirky build quality, interesting design decisions, looks to die for and above all it was built to be a flagship. It will remain a legacy in Astons History.

I wouldn't go for a V8 as for me nothing stirs the soul more than a hand built british sports car with 12 cylinder symphony up front.

I too am playing with the idea of swapping my 996tt for an Aston. Cant decide between DB9 or AMV8. Whats the servicing cost like on these?

Thanks for the replies guys.

This is (mostly) hypothetical - I'd be seriously stretching myself to spend 90k on a car but I saw a DB9 the other day (they're pretty rare up here) and was reminded just how damn beautiful they are. I toyed with buying a DB7 last year but decided not to after realising that at 6'5" I struggled like fcuk to fit.

It wouldn't be an everyday car - the e-class or landrover would take care of that but back seats (even small ones) would be a big advanatge because we have a baby.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...

I'd get the V8 then - at 28 the V8 is right up your street isn't it? A young man's car. Also the V12's would be costlier to service I should imagine.

I'm not saying that the Vanquish is an old man's car particularly, but I think the V8 is definitely more youthful.

Thing is, if I had the money my Vanq would have to be in my colour, with the manual gearbox conversion and proper some works fiddling to boot. Which isn't really the point of getting something second time around for similar money to a new car you can spec to your choice. The Vanq makes me ache, personally, and I would have one in a flash. Just the short matter of not having £180k kicking around.

laugh Aye but most people are quick to tell me i look in my late thirties. B'stards... mad Thing is, 2 seats i guess would make my life much easier... But you're right, it's a beautiful thing indeed and probably more suited to a younger chap.

Anyone got experience of Murray motors in Edinburgh?

The Bond stuntman (Casino Royale) was only 23/24 when he drove the Aston - mind you, he didn't keep it on the road... smile

I don't think driving skill is the sole preserve of those in their 30's (or any other age), it's simply a case of the DB9 and Vanquish being less youthful in style than the V8.

I had a VXT for a few years and kept it on the road (and mostly on the track...) tongue out

I'm not sure age is a sure-fire sign of driving ability?
