Did this in the Stradale in June. We started in Bornio(italy) and headed up through into switzerland. Road is nice and quiet up until you get up into Stelvio - coming down was not so good - loads of cyclists, motorbikes and even a 40 ft lorry at one stage.

And also if you have a passenger (in my case my wife) remember that it is not always as fun to sit and watch going down the hairpins in the passenger seat. It cost me a full day of power shopping in Milan.
I'm lucky - my wife enjoys being thrown around the car! Did the Route Napoleon last year, and she loved it. Also, her idea of power shopping is an hour in Waterstones, so no real downside! The Stelvio is one of those passes you have to do - once! And I do mean once! It needs to be ticked off every Petrolheads 'must drive' roads.
If you have to do it, go early in the morning to avoid the numerous camper vans, cyclists and numpty tourists.
North to South has far too many very tight hairpins to make good progress, and at half distance becomes quite monotonous, and you just want to get to the top for a break. However, at the top, all that you can find are tacky tourist shops and the odd bar for a beer.
Descending on the South side towards Bormio starts off nicely, but then you have to do the tunnels - old, twisty, dark tunnels that are so narrow that 2 cars cannot pass easily, meaning cars often get stuck in the middle and have to wait for oncoming traffic to pass - they really do need traffic light controls!
There really are much, much better passes to drive in the area, but, as I said earlier, it is one of the Big Ones, and every Petrolhead should experience it once.
All IMHO of course!!
Perhaps a Sagaris wasn't the best choice of vehicle when we did it last!
Have a great time

I actually enjoyed the Timmelsjoch pass more than the Stelvio. Timmelsjoch is the highest alpine pass and is situated to the left (comming from the south i.e. Italian side) of the Brenner Motorway and tunnel. Exit at Merano and take the highway and it will take you over the Timmelsjoch and you will join the Innsbruck motorway on the North side of the Alps.
