I understand that Aston has a new gearbox oil specification that improves the notchy gearchange. Can anyone tell me (1) if this is correct and if so (2) would I get it when it goes in for its first service next week?

thanks

Yes this is correct, I had it fitted to mine, the change wasn't a revolution, but it did improve things! When I had mine done last November, it was only on an...... as needed basis! In other words you had to phone up Aston HQ ask them for the change as your gear change was very bad, this was then verified by the dealer! I was told the oil would eventually become standard!
Ask your dealer if they now fit it as standard, if not Aston HQ is the route, but the dealer will have to verify the change is bad enough to warrant it!
Best of luck.

I'm sure someone posted on the AMOC site to note the change of oil had been withdrawn (can't recall why).

Not sure what cars you guys are coming from, but I find the change nicely mechanical. Bit tougher when cold, but even then with care it's fine.

Can't abide rubbery, non-descript changes and will beg Aston not to change things too much!

I think they said it was because of worries about the long-term effects on the gearbox. They were going to look into changing the linkages instead.

It does seem that the gearboxes vary enormously. Mine isn't too bad from first to second (although it needs a bit of effort when cold), but reverse is a nightmare, often requiring a double-declutch. It's hard to tell when it's actually engaged because sometimes I get the reversing sensor noises and the reverse gear indicator on the dashboard, and it's still not in gear!

When I got the car they told me that the 2007 models had a different gearbox oil to the older ones, and that had improved things, but that in 3 weeks time (from now) they would have another type of oil to try. That would have coincided roughly with my 1K service, so I was going to try it until I read that news on an AMOC thread.

I'll still ask about what options are available when the service comes up, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's difficult for the dealers to get any information from Aston Martin these days, what with all the buyout and strike distractions!

They now have a different oil and a changed linkage to improve things.

This was released recently and mine is booked in on Tuesday to have it done.

My local dealer has not done one before so could not comment on the likely improvement. I will post back after it has been done to report progress.

Glad to hear that they're approaching it from both angles. I get the feeling that my problems with reverse are more linkage related (because it just doesn't want to go in sometimes) and those with second are more oil related (due to it just being a bit reluctant when cold).

Whoami: I saw that you posted the oil information on the AMOC reverse gear problems thread. Are the dealers going to be looking into problems with reverse and/or 2nd? Or some other gearbox issue?

I heard the same story, that the oil had been withdrawn, but last week my dealer called to say it was now available again (maybe a different oil from the last lot of different oil if that makes sense) and they changed mine last week as second gear as very bad on cold mornings.

It has improved it quite a bit. Still notchy on some mornings in second but nowhere near as bad as before, so thumbs up from me!

I was told that the original oil was withdrawn and what they are now using a different one.

Good to hear that it is an improvement.

Did it help with engaging reverse?

Reverse has always been fine for me, so can't comment. However second was so bad it started to grate when changing, this has now been fixed and i'm happy
