Hi,

was wondering what the auto 'box on a DB7 Vantage is like in terms of performance/reliability/need for servicing/etc, when used fairly regularly?

All thoughts/opinions/experiences appreciated.

Thanks

I ran an auto (not flappy paddle) DB7 vantage for a year and frankly always felt a bit cheated on performance and feel. Yes it was smooth, reliable and my Aston guys reckoned pretty indestructible but something was missing for me. I switched to a 6 speed manual and have not looked back - a totally different car.

my Vantage auto goes like stink ,gearboxes are bombproof and need next to no maintenance.
if you drive in traffic regularly, get caught in jams the auto,in my opinion, is the only choice

Mine seems fine in terms of reliability - have done 14k miles in the last 8 months. As said above it's not the most sporty of things; even in sport mode the using kickdown you can measure the gearchange and seconds.

Does the std 5 speed auto still have the tiptronic style kick up/down capability or is that only found on the TT auto? - a local performance car specialist has a 2001 db7 v12 vantage I'm interested in, 56k miles with a std auto box for £32k- I'm tempted but need to know if the TT auto boxed db7's are a better buy? or am I better off with a manual?

If you care about resale, I'd personally buy the manual or the TT.

Reason being that firstly, the market is shifting so that more performance oriented buyers are looking at the DB7. The manual appeals to this audience (though personally, I enjoyed my TT equipped car).

On the TT, you might persuade a buyer of a manual to look at a TT but not a straight auto. An auto buyer will be more than happy with the TT. Ergo, TT has a bigger potential demand than straight auto IMHO.

No mechanical issues by the way, though I have heard of one autobox going awol but I'm pretty sure that was an I6 not a V12.
