Aston Martin bidding continues

No cash yet trousered by Ford

V8 Vantage at Goodwood

Bidding on the Aston Martin sale could go to a third round  according to the FT.

And rather than the process being over, Ford said it expects revised offers to be made today.

As we reported yesterday, still in the race are Simon Halabi, the property tycoon, the buy-out group Doughty Hanson, Canadian car parts group Magna, and a consortium led by Australian media billionaire James Packer. The JP Morgan-led bid that included ex-Ford exec Jac Nasser as a partner has dropped out of the race.

One bidder said that Ford's attempts to get much more than the analysts' valuation of $450 million are unlikely to bear fruit, since the costs of running Aston outside the shared overheads of a large group such as Ford would be high.

Are any of those groups British? Would Aston Martin return to being an independent?

Nope, although Jamie Packer is a colonial.
He's actually a right spoiled brat. A good friend of mine was at his 18th birthday party in Sydney when one of the Darling Harbour exhibition domes was hired out for him.
The culmination of the night was when the wraps were taken off his present in the centre of the floor and there was a new Mercedes coupe, cos Daddy liked Mercedes and always drove them. Jamie however wanted a Porsche and went on to have a right tantrum over the whole thing....

Wonder if he'll throw a tantrum when he doesn't get an Aston.

From what i know of daddy I'd be amazed if he hadn't quietly and ruthlessly punished the tantrum.

Or a well known saying in Oz "I'm flat out like Packer at the polo"

(Kerry had a heartattack while playing polo about 15 years back)

Yes, and he's an utter prat. Firstly he is actually a Scientologist (his father, Kerry, thought all religion was cack, but especially scientology, so that must have gone down well), which tells you how stupid he is, and most of his business descisions have turned out to be disasters. Most of his investments have lost money lately, his dad was reasonably sensible business man, sticking mainly to what he knew, but Jamie is a numpty par excellence, mainly because he tries to buy into stuff he doesn't know about just because it's fashionable. He drives a blue DB9 currently, and probably thinks, 'I like that, I think I will buy the company' despite knowing nothing about the industry.

I really hope to god he doesn't buy Aston or it will no doubt end up going down the drain again .

I wonder if John Towers, Peter Beale, Nick Stephenson and John Edwards are looking for a new project.

Oh Dear. Anyone for the Aston Martin AMV8 Flying Saucer Mysteron special edition? Comes with the collected works of L. Ron Hubbard embroidered into the seat fabric, offered only to personal friends of Tom Cruise...

Actually it doesn't bear thinking about really does it?

God I'd laugh if Packer got it, you lose the ashes and then to add insult to injury Aston becomes a tricked up Commie-door for the locals! Given he lost out on the UK Super Casino yesterday he'll probably want Aston even more.

Wouldn't be suprised if this was to value the group and the "third round" is for the real contenders to see how much extra they have to find to fill out the cheque/put on the AMEX voucher. That'll do nicely says Bill Ford yum

With the exception of Magna none of these people are going to either be able to or want to invest in new product for the company. Halabi hasn't even done up the outside of the Athenaum in his time of owning it and thats his speciality, property. Doughty will leverage Aston to the hilt and then shift it after stripping it down to a skeleton staff and some drawings to make it look like they've put in the work.
Packer is just a fool. within weeks of his fathers death he sold large parts of a pretty decent empire because he had no idea how to run them. Aston won't look good under him.
Tell you what if the're looking like decent investors why don't we all get together and put ina last minute bid. Can't do any worse. Aston Martin (PH holdings)proprietor PetrolTed. I can see it now.

Magna would seem to be the best bet. Since the relationship will be highly symbiotic.
