DBS & Bond
Discussion
Saw it last night. The DBS is just superb. I now see the point of the piano black finish. Pity what happens to it.
You also have to admire the professionalism of the product placement. Maybe the fact that I like the product influences the judgement, but you get Ford Mondeo, Jaguar S-Type (in a fabulous met olive colour), RR Sport, Jaguar XJR, long before you even get to the Aston DB5 and the DBS. I like the professionalism of the whole thing.
Film is IMO the best Bond in a long long time. They have looked hard at Fleming's first book and produced something fresh. Connery was definitive, of course, but Craig still makes him look like, if not a hairdresser, then at least a fine gentleman's barber. And he looks as if he has potential, if they can just keep up the quality of the scripts.

Twas very good and yes that DBS is sex
Well that saves a blmbg msg
Here's my thoughts:
Definitely Stirred and a fair bit Shaken...
I'll start from the beginning (always a good place)
The Title Credits
As a devotee to the art of JB I must say these were Fan-bloody tastic. Fresh, ingenious use of the casino theme and with the odd nod back to the Maurice Binder heritage of the truly classic Bond credits.
The Music
I raised my eyebrows when I heard Chris Cornell (Soundgarden) was singing the theme tune, but I must say it's excellent. His raspy voice and the heavier style really blend to the new look Bond.
As for the general score I think this is David Arnold's best yet
(it was playing in the Aston on the way to work this morning)
The Action
Sweaty palm stuff, it really does keep you on the edge of your seat. The chase through the building site, showed some pretty nifty free running and a different slant to the usual chase type scene. I did feel the Miami airport scene was a bit "ok what can we blow up and crash into now", but still kept me interested. The other incidental actions scenes all worked pretty well, and all the better for the lack of CGI.
The Babes
Solange she's HOT HOT HOT !! Totally delicious, literally smoulders on screen, extremely sexy and looks fantastic in that red dress
Vesper , interesting casting and nice to see Bond meet his feminine match. Thought she added a nice angle to the usual Bond girl, certainly different from the past, and not seen since Tracy in OHMSS.
The Villains
Le Chiffre - Mad Mikkelsens face with those prominent cheek bones and chisel chin make him look very much the villain even with saying anything. Excellent casting and very well acted. Not sure about the bloody tear duct though
The Allies
I thought I'd miss Q not being in this film, but it was actually quite refreshing not having the usual interaction with Bond and the overkill on gadgets like we saw in Die Another Day.
M's interaction with Bond were some of the best scenes imo and she shows us a tougher non-nonsense M in this film, again well acted by Judy Dench (as usual)
Felix Lighter - I think this was the only mediocre casting of the film. For the little parts he had, I thought they came across quite weak.
Mathis - I liked Giancarlo Gianninni in Hannibal with Anthony Hopkins. Again another good performance here... won't spoil it
The Astons
Lovely DB5 and nicely worked into the plot
The DBS looks fantastic and sounds great, just a shame it's not in the film for longer
007
From the opening scene you immediately get given the impression this bond is not to be with, cold, calculating and very much the assassin. I found it very refreshing in this film that Bond takes a few knocks, get's beaten up and looks in pretty bad shape at some points. This really does add to the believability of his character and makes him look human. Craigs craggy face makes him look every bit the 'I mean business' Bond
I feel he's lived up to the hype and has slipped neatly into his extremely snug Brioni, and when the classic 'Bond, James Bond' line is delivered it's just perfect
My only criticisms of the film are maybe it's 20 minutes too long and they dwelled on the card game for a bit too long.
Summing up....
This is definitely the best Bond film since the 60's and Craig has risen to the dizzy heights of knocking on Connery's shoulder (the next film in 2008 will be the true test to that)
Happy Shady
p.s. seeing it again tonight with Mrs Tree

Oh go on then I might aswell mention the film :P
An excellent Bond, one of the best yet. Im with Shadey on it being say 20mins too long.
Im not with him on the opening title...I tried to like it, but in the end decided it was just cr@p.
The free running was class and nicely placed acknowledgement in the opening credits where the guy comes quite far down, nearly last, but you notice it because it is a different credit to normal and then it is one of the first scenes. I liked that.

Understand it might not be everyone's cup of tee, but i'm an anorak on things like this
You dont say
Did you see the interior of that DBS? Where the hell has that designer been hiding for the last 20yrs? Somebody knight him! It was a work of art.
...and those seats! Just something about them said "designed for a car geek".

Tried to sit in the car at Le Mans, but alas my 'arris is not the correct dimensions

You know, Alan Mcnish said something similar to me just a I was slipping into his R10 while his back was turned...
I thought the opening titles were a work of art. Better than Goldfinger. And I thought that the card scenes were an ideal length. It was central to the story. If anything the collapsing palazzo scene became a little gratuitous but I think we're quibbling. A very fine effort on any terms.

Is 'arris another word for wallet?
Anyhow, I have sat in a DBR9 at Silverstone which had David Brabham's seat in. Andf I fitted. And I could reach the pedals and wheel. So, if he's getting too old you know where i am. And I already own a DBS, so no problems there, then.
Haven't seen the film yet but I have sat in the car (see the current issue of FHM if you're brave enough!). The car, though, is utterly fabulous and any photos of it taken at the Nurburgring simply don't do it any justice - it's stunning and has enormous presence. Aston should be proud.

Try as I might, I cannot seem to find a press shot of the actual DBS side on, to compare to that rather lovely initial design sketch. I wonder why?
What I did find though was the cgi below, which is based on the original sketch. Now if only....
