Stolen Aston Martin DB6 Volante
Discussion
****STOP PRESS*****
The car has now been found undamaged and two suspects in custody.
PHEW!!!
Last night my father's DB6 Vantage Volante was stolen fron the drive outside his place in London
The vehicles details are as follows:
1968 Aston Martin DB6 Vantage Volante Mark 1
Silver with black hood and interior
Registration NDV 131F
Manual ZF 5 speed
Chassis Number DBVC/3691/R
Engine Number 400/3655/VC
This is an original RHD vantage volante, of which there were only 30 or so built. One distinguishing feature is that it is missing the driver's side rear bumper.
Please keep your eyes open. This is a very rare car and we're all hoping it will turn up but the more people who keeps their eyes open the better.
All indications point to a professional job.
In the meantime, I have notified Aston Martin Heritage, AMOC, magazines and all the dealers & auction houses I can think of. Not having much luck with the insurance company though. Put me through to an Indian call centre that promptly cut me off!
If you have any further thoughts or ideas, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Many thanks.
Chris

Look, that is a horrific thing to happen, but, seriously, what was it doing standing in the drive? Older cars are extremely easy to nick. I hope it hasnt been pinched by a joy rider who will damage it. Otherwise, you are almost certain to get it back at some point. Its a bit conspicuous. Trust you were well insured.
Thanks for making this a sticky.
I know putting it in the drive probably wasn't the best idea. Much of the time it is locked away but there is no garage at the house. So if you want to drive it, you have to take a bit of a risk. But in terms of value, there are plenty of cars parked in the street in that area that are worth the same if not more so you'd think they would be much more attractive to theives.
He's had the car over six years and it's been parked in the drive on and off for much of that time with no problem. I don't know if it's been stolen to order or not. I think the guys came to steal something (a neighbour saw a truck at 4am with 2 blokes in it), saw my dad's and thought they'd take that instead. Maybe they don't realise the rarity of it?
Definitely wasn't joy riders. It's fitted with several anti-theft devices that they would not know about.

Yes we're insured but we'd much rather have the car back.

No, the car didn't have a tracker. It was complete chance it was found by the police. The CID officers were tailing someone else with a stolen car and when he led them to it. I've been told that some theives steal cars and then park them somewhere for a couple of weeks to see if there is any tracking device fitted. If it's still there when they get back, chances are it's okay.
I'm currently looking into the best security options for it but it's a little bit tricky.
For months at a time, the car is garaged and the power is turned off (older Astons have a switch to do this rather than disconnecting the battery) to stop the battery going flat.
This would represent a problem with a tracker or any other type of alarm/immobiliser. One option is to fit a conditioner to keep the battery charged but I need to look into this abit more (ie check garage has power etc).

If there is no power in the garage an alternative option might be for a solar powered battery conditioner. I can't imagine the drain on the battery is that great when the car is stored - its not as if the car has a wide range of alarms, clocks and other electronic gadgetry to keep running.
Pleased to hear the good news.

I've highlighted the above as I invested in one for my SL earlier this year as it is kept outside now, meaning I could not use my battery conditioner. I was a bit skeptical at first but its a great piece of kit, and keeps the battery in tip top condition. Put it this way - the alarm no longer can flatten the battery (and at a ton for a new battery its no joke).
Nice one
I was very glad to read your DB 6 volante was recovered. This is much better news than for our neighbours DB6 volante British registration number UPP 900 E stolen in France more than 20 years ago and never seen or heard of since.! Just the cherished memory of a very fine motor car (which it was my great privilege to ride in once or twice)remain.
