Aston Conundrum .....
Discussion
Probably been done to death before, but what the heck.....
Currently in an E39 M5, looking for a change towards the end of the year, having had an M3 previously (I change cars every 18 months or so, and they are used on a daily basis (25k miles pa).
I was originally drawn to a Ferrari 550 / 575, but I'm now looking at the possibility of a DB7 GT (its the only one in my price range really). What I'd really like to know is if it would stand comparison against the M5 / M3 in terms of handling and acceleration. All the road tests I have read suggest that it could be a bit "soft" (comparatively), but then again the M5 isn't exactly pin sharp when compared to the M3. What I'd really like is something with the bruiser capability of the M5 with some of the accuracy of the M3, so would the DB7 measure up or is it more of a cruiser than an accomplished cross country basher?
Cheers

definitely much more of a cruiser. Test drive one first imo and see the difference.
...agreed - very much a boat in comparison to either the M3 or M5 . You have to remember that (to keep costs down) the DB7 was built on the Jag XJS platform.
ooh
and they look soooo pretty!
can you get handling packs for them perhaps

...not sure about handling packs. But they could certainly do with them! Agreed - they are exquisitely pretty - just in a straight line.
The GT has, in essence, got a handling pack over the standard 7. Best of all the 7's IMO.
Test drive it and/or ignore any comments not pertaining specifically to the GT as it is not the same as a standard 7.
Whether the other comments are based upon experience or are just Clarksonisms I do not know. However, I drove the Vantage and GT back to back and they are two totally different cars IMO
Handling is much better than a standard 7.

Wasn't the last XK Jaguar always judged a better GT in all respects to the DB7 by car hacks, but especially in value?
Probably, but then the XK wasn't mentioned in the original post of cars being considered
Yes the XK is cheaper, hence people look at them and think, cheap car
The DB7 Vantage had nothing on the DB7GT- the GT is seriously a huge improvement on the Vantage. Ok the interior is still a bit cramped and full of Ford, but then the DB7 was always like that, its an incredibly beautiful and capable car.
If your going to get a DB7, get the GT. About £55,000- £65,000 will get you a 2003 model. Gotta love depriciation sometimes!!

Ah, Shadytree, the man with the chip on his shoulder.
I've absolutely no axe to grind. Both cars were designed by a Scotsman and both look great to me.
But I did note the laughter from dealers and the like at those who didn't question why their Aston cost so much more than the Jaguar. And you'll note I posted my observation as a question and not an opinion.
