Astons win design award

Car designers rate V8 Vantage and DB9

none
Aston Martin’s V8 Vantage and DB9 have taken first and third places in a poll of automotive design professionals. In their recent readership survey, readers of Web site Car Design News voted the Aston Martin V8 Vantage their favourite current production car design, with the Aston Martin DB9 in third place. The poll for Car Design News, a leading online source of information for the automotive design industry, brought over 1,000 responses, most from working automotive designers and students of car design.

As well as being placed an impressive first and third place in the top ten, additional votes for the Aston Martin Vanquish meant that the total scores for the three Aston Martin models were higher than for any other brand, including BMW, Porsche, Mercedes and Lamborghini.

"It's a fantastic result for Aston Martin," said Nick Hull, Director of Car Design News. "Our readers have a high awareness of proportions and design details – there was a precise discernment in voting between V8 Vantage, Vanquish and DB9."

AM design chief Marek Reichman said: "Every Aston Martin expresses the core values of power, beauty and soul, from the Aston Martin V8 Vantage, introduced in 2005, to the V12-engined DB9 and DB9 Volante and the flagship Vanquish S. Bodywork is taut and poised, with strong muscular surfaces that are instantly recognisable. Our designers and modellers work with a sculptural language. The play of light on the surface is incredibly important to us."

Aston Martin's design tradition is underpinned by the company's unique VH architecture, an extruded aluminium construction platform that provides exceptional manufacturing flexibility and forms the backbone of the current generation of Aston Martins. VH allows us "to keep the form language and soul of the product," says Reichman, "Aston Martin should always be about the proportions."

Yes Astons look lovely, and the latest incarnations look lovely, but where is the design innovation? But IMO Aston Martin are in danger of going down the Jaguar road of 'too samey' styling (look at the new XK8 - nice, but not exactly different. BMW and Audi designs have evolved, but Astons look like sharper edged versions of their cars 20 years ago.

Another Aston - yeah, looks like the last one etc. etc.

The 4 door Panemera looks snazzy though so I'll give them 8 out of 10

Congrats to Aston Love their styling, strong and stylish. Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the 4 door AM called the 'Rapide'. I believe the Panemara is going to be the new 4 door from Porsche. Anyway, the Rapide did look rather tasty High om my list in case I win the lottery (next lottery is 29th of april, Queens day, jackpot of €15 million, here's for hoping!!)

If "evolution" means looking like a modern bmw, congratulations Aston for remaining "too samey". The accolade is well deserved.

Oh hang on a minute, what's that sports car company that everyone raves about that haven't changed their design for 50 years? Oh yes Porsche, the people who showed us a "911 S t r e t c h" and called it a 4 door

Well done to Aston Martin I say Rich...

Check out Zagato. They did the trick with the 60s Aston and that new Rari looks like a predecessor . . . Nothing new.
