Aston releases new toy

Branded top-end Nokia phone. Looks nice...

Nokia 8800 Aston Martin Edition
Nokia 8800 Aston Martin Edition
Aston Martin has released a new and completely unexpected new product. It's a phone.

Well, it's a Nokia 8800 to be precise, the product of a tie-up with the world's biggest mobile phone maker. A limited edition, it features a discrete laser-etched 'Aston Martin' logo on the stainless steel casing and the words 'Power, Beauty & Soul’, etched into the Nokia 8800's stand-alone charging station. And the packaging apparently bears the Aston Martin wings too.

According to Nokia, the 8800 is its flagship phone, whose slender stainless steel slider case has a weighty, machined feel, with the polished and brushed metal casing. The surgical-quality resin is finished with processes usually used in watch-making, offering a uniquely tactile experience (it says here). The bistable spring mechanism opens to reveal a concealed camera, and uses ball-bearings. Sliding open the phone is a precise and smooth movement. The colour display is protected by a specially toughened glass screen.

It's also a tri-band phone including Bluetooth, email, a 64MB MP3 player, an FM radio and ringtones by Ryuichi Sakamoto.

The Nokia 8800 Aston Martin Edition will cost £800 excluding VAT. It's available now from Aston Martin dealers.

Of course I could in no way whatsoever point you in the direction of a zip file containing all of those ring tones.....

Nice phone, very nicely made, but not very highly featured if you want "phone gadgets".

Think about what happened with the last lot of Limited Edition Motorolas and the reason they are charging that price will become apparent

Also, the above Pistonhead story is only half a story....sorry...

It has omitted :

Nokia 8800 V8 Vantage ‘Limited Edition’

"These Limited Edition handsets were produced to commemorate the world media launch of the eagerly anticipated V8 Vantage. A total number of 250 handsets were produced – 200 of which were presented to each media guest during the launch event and only 50 units remain."

£1000+vat

Think there is 2 versions. The 250 limited "Vantage" edition's and the "standard" version's from the news story...

I could have worded it better :

Not only is there the phone mentioned in the original Pistonheads story, there is ALSO a limited edition that is not mentioned of which the 250 were made and only 50 are left, yours for £1k plus VAT.

So is the limited edition basically the same but there are less of them?

But like the V600's these were both phones already on the market for some time when they got the Aston makeover. So they aren't really cutting-edge phone technology/feature wise and most of the features (backdrops, ringtones etc) 10 minutes on the web and a usb cable and you've got them.

Would never pay that much for one!

Ahh nice. I used to have a 8800... until did my washing late one night after getting off a long flight.

Needless to say, it came out very clean but sadly not quite as functional.

Just take the battery out and put it in the airing cupboard for a few days to properly dry. you could even try submerging the (batteryless) phone into some filtered water first to get rid of any lurking soap.
Sounds like a silly idea but I pretty much cured my girlfriends phone the same way. Ok, so a couple of the keys were never quite right, but it made & received calls.

Alternatively, send the dead phone to me

For goodness sake why? If they gave them away with Aston's fair enough, but it's just like Toyota drivers all jumping about with Ferrari keyrings...
