Is it just new owner paranoia or have EVO really got a downer on the Vantage? After having raved about it all through the development phase it seems that now they cannot miss an opportunity to knock it - see the latest group performance test. Perhaps I am just delusional?

Or, in fact, is this the latest trend in journalism; to put any exciting new prospect on a pedestal and then take pleasure in smashing the pedestal down at the frenzied peak of public interest? Sound familiar? I think one or two "celebs" might have a comment to make.

Didn't they do this with the Focus RS - bigged it up, then massively criticised its Quaife diff and then, finally, went back to it a while later and decided it was alright after all. I have never driven one but I've followed several round race circuits and never failed to be impressed. Same with the BMW M3 CSL.

So where does this leave my mistress? Currently being branded a tart but in 2 years time "fondly" remembered - Christine Keeler. Who knows and who cares.

Well, I do. If anyone from EVO ever bothers to read this site, guys, its not big and its not clever to knock a thing of beauty just because you can.

Just my opinion of course.

I know and have seen what you mean. They blamed the fact they were given a dodgy press car for the RS, IIRC.

Maybe it's their time of month, lol....

I suspect its because most jorno's only write good things becuse of the "benefits" they get with it. Its like Ferrari. Any new Ferrari is the best car ever, until its replacement comes out, when you finally get to read about the previous one's shortcomings.

It happened when a magazine road tested a DB7 against a F355. They mentioned the Ferrari, and said "it cant be normal, but have been done by the importer..."

I suepct if Aston left a few goodies in the room they will start to say better things about the car.

Er.- correct me if I'm wrong you sensitive little souls - but aren't Evo running a Vantage in their LongTerm section and didn't the guy running it (who I don't think is a full time journo.) buy it with his own money. It follows that the monthly reports are probably pretty unbiased warts and all. You don't say whether you've had any problems with your cars - a lot of owners have. I actually agree that some of your comments may apply to some of the motoring press but you need to be unbiased yourselves before whinging. And yes I've got a V8 myself.

I know what you mean.

Very often, when a new car is tested in isolation it can be seen for what it is. However, track testing can give a particularly one dimensional view and it's easy to get caught up in just having a great time.
Once a car is properly tested on the road (assuming it's primarily supposed to be a road car), and especially group tested, it's easier to see a vehicle's shortcomings compared to it's peers.
This was true of the Focus RS, which was considered by many to be a better track car than road car because of the way the diff behaved in the real world. EVO weren't on thier own in doing a 'U' turn.
Ditto the AM V8. Several journos, including the Top Gear 'entertainers' (can't bring myself to call them journalists), have initially heaped praise on the Aston only to reverse their decision (to a greater or lesser degree) once a proper test is done.
Finding fault with a beautiful, 380hp car is part of their job. Keeping that critism in perspective is the job of the reader, IMO.
And, no, in don't write for EVO!

evo do this on a regular basis now. Someone they know has bought a nice car and they immediately adopt it onto their Fast Fleet just so they cay say that they're the only mag in the UK running a Lambo Murci, Aston V8 and Carrera GT. Sad but true.

I wouldn't read too much into it

Well the weren't exactly shy about slamming the DB9 when they eventually tested it on UK roads. When every other mag praises it.

They're a pretty honest mag as far as I'm concerned.

The Merci in Evo's fast fleet is owned by Simon who comes on here. He had nothing to do with Evo and didnt know anyone there IIRC. Applied to do it and got the job as he was good at it.

Its all honest guys with honest opinions running their own cars. Even the Evo editor has his 550 in their and writes very honest reviews about it.

Too many conspiracy theories. Just cos Evo say a car is good / bad, doesn't mean that they are right !

I know about Simonspider and all that but you can't tell me that if he had a Fiat Stilo, they'd let him do it.

FRUITCAKE. Er you really don't know what you're on about - or are as biased as you say Evo are. The guy running his own V8 in Evo seems to be telling it exactly as it is - or do you think he's inventing probs with car. Also before he ran the V8 they featured his 997S, BoxsterS, M3 and ClioV6 MK1 so a) they don't just go for people with supercars and b) surely his reports are going to be more 'real' than a full time journo. reporting on a manufacturer supplied car.
Finally what's your own experience of owning a V8 - I've had mine 4 months and had loads of niggles. Not good enough for £86,000.........but I still love it!!

SAMMY. Er you kind of missed what I was saying. What I was saying was that evo get these people in who run nice cars or their friends so they can say they run them. It helps sell mags. I never said there was anything wrong with the content of the guest reports, in fact, they're always the ones I read first at they're the best but as the mag can't get a CGT on long term test, you can't help but think...

Don't assume I was slagging the guest reports off. I'm not. They are the best because they drive the cars like they own, rather than stole, them and it never gets taken by someone else for a weekend to thrash the arse off it.

I'm glad you like your car. I'm a fan of them but I'm not a fan of unnecessary belligerence.

Fruitcake. Fair enough - I obviously misunderstood you. Sorry if you, in turn, mistook what was intended as mild criticism to be belligerence! I'm sure I'm being particularly thick here but what's a CGT? - apart from a nasty form of tax that is.

I believe that the abbreviation is more commonly used for the Bentley Continental GT. ( not that I mean to imply the CGT is common!)

Doh! As I thought, thick as two short planks. Even more reason for Evo to go the 'private' route then - Porsche don't supply long term test cars. Got to admire the guy running one in Evo - spents a huge amount of cash on one and then has it resprayed to taste!

Got to go - the passenger side window on my V8 needs rebooting. Again. Already had drivers side retrofix done by dealer so guess I need to book another visit. Oh, and the sat.nav. (a Volve unit I believe) has come over all shy and won't pop up from the dash without a helping prod. Dear oh dear, if I'd wanted a TVR I'd have bought one! Hang on just looked at it on the drive.............still love it

The fast fleet are the first pages I turn too - the cars are used in the real world just like 99.9% of its readers. IMHO I'd like to see more cars on their fast fleet - yes it's nice reading about the Supercars but I'd also like to see reports on 2nd hand cars a few years old as again most of the readers can't afford to buy brand new cars.

Evo is the best car mag out there and I think they should have their own TV programme too as there's nothing decent on these days.
