From Top Gear a couple of years back now

Quite nice, but I prefer a darker colour

Aston London has this very car on sale

www.astonlondon.com/sales.html

Look at the Aston Martin V8 Vantage 1979

The colour is typical of a certain era and it is all about originality.

One can always go for a full respray in Cumberland Grey with black interior...

This car is simply stunning and now that it has been on Top Gear, it has a greater value IMHO

Good spotting - I remember the night this was on Top Gear. My mates called me up to tell me they saw my car on TV and I should tune in, meanwhile I was on the way home from my mechanics, by train ! Still she is running very nicely now.

Hi Jock,

did you sell the 1977 Vantage and got a V8 Oscar India as I understand from your pics?

Is it a Vantage or a normal V8 OI?

You got it - the 1981 OI is pictured. I added the front air dam from the vantage spec simply because it looks better (but hit a high curb at Richmond Park Golf course last month damn it). I've also learnt that the chassis and engine numbers tell a tale and mine has 580VS after each matching number. I think this means sport and relates to SS exhausts and sifferent factory tune settings.

Yes. In the late 70s the factory realised the engines werent producing quite what they should be. So then introduced "stage 1 engine tune", whose cars have an S in their chassis number. (Loud V8's is one example). Stage 2 was thought of as a Vantage. In 1980, stage 1 engin tune became standard (hence the change in chassis number to 580- 80 being 1980). Not sure why yours has got the "S" on the end of the engine, though...It could be that you have the optional "sports exhaust", which has the rearbost silencers removed and straight-through pipes.

Now, I think thats right!

First bit is right Will but not even close on the last bit. If Jock's car is a 1980/81 car the chassis number will be something like V8SOR12275 The "S" denotes it is a saloon, the Vantage would have a "V" as in V8VOR12271. The engine number would be V/580/2275/S, "S" being for Stage 1 tune, if it was a Vantage it would be V/580/2271/V, the "V" is for Vantage of course. The engine or chassis number will not tell you anything about optional extras added, they are only listed on the build sheet.
Which '77 Vantage did you have Jock, I currently have 4 "Fliptail" Vantages in my garage.

Hi Roo - You know your stuff (wow, 4 fliptails !). Mine is the saloon as denoted in the numbering and was built in 1981. It has a bunch of Vantage features on it that were added as you described.
