Just looking around for somthing to replace the TVR that i can put the sprog in the back of, and the only things that crop up are early DB7's and xk8/r

looking around the db7 seems to get a real slagging, i.e
badly built, poor driving experience, but no real detail..

so what are the problems..

On Clarksons top 100 cars he says it 'tramlines under braking' whatever that means.

On the build quality thing, I reckon the later cars will be much better built now that Fords money and standards have been taken into account.

I agree with you - I think that they look beautiful, the negative critcisms that I have heard have been about reliability and electrics.

As a TVR owner nothing new then ;-).

Graham, if you've read through the previous postings on this subject I won't bore you again other than to say I was heartbroken when I realised what a poor car it was. ( Drove 4 before making that opinion) If the change is needed 'cos of the kid(s) whats wrong with a Cerbera or if your wanting out of TVRs how about trying an HSV? I did and bought one with no regrets after 4 TVRs.

Ford eh? Better built eh? Standards eh? Thankfully I've only ever had to drive 2 Fords. They've both felt cheap and nasty, power comes in ok though(bloody automatic). Driving the crap out of a brand new Focus hire car at the mo. The first one I got pulled to the right and off the road, very worrying. Had to turn left to keep straight

I was told that the Astons are being fitted with things from the Ford parts bin. If you shell out serious cash (which you'll do for and Aston)you'd be pretty P***ed off to know my (soon to be shagged)hire car had the same cheap, nasty switches etc.

I love Aston by the way. The interference by Ford i.e sharing parts, just really annoys me. Bet the GT40 has new interior parts

personally i prefer the looks of the DB7, however from what I've read the XKR handles better... if that helps you make your decision...

good luck

Looks wise I would say the XK8/R is as good looking as the DB7. I think a Jag is cheaper to own, but, and it is a big BUT, it is not an Aston Martin. One day I would like to own an Aston Martin of some descrption and maybe have gone through a Jaguar to get there!

Check out those awfully nice people at Racing Green who provide the Arden conversions.

Could be a way to get a very interesting XKR: 420bhp, sequential gearbox - ooh, suits you Sir!

Interesting... given that with the Jag he says it's a poor man's DB7...!

2 cars are hardly indicative of a brand... and given that you have a hire car (which are generally abused) is hardly a fair comparison is it? I've had Beemers and Mercs as hire cars, and even with a few thousand on the clock, bits of trim have been falling off, the brakes have juddered, and it's evident that someone has hit a kerb...

Same bits as the Ford parts bin... really? Parts commonality eh? Perhaps you'd be interested to know that Ford parts come from the same supplier as the German "prestige" marques get their stuff from... but then, the car has a blue oval badge on the front, so it's obviously inferior; regardless of the fact that the Focus won the German TUV award this year - beating those German prestige marques.

Hire car, soon to be shagged? Oh, so YOU'RE mistreating it as well. Hardly a surprise that it's not in great nick, if people do that to them, is it?

You LOVE Aston? Jeez... daren't think what you'd say if you didn't like them. "interference by Ford i.e sharing parts, just really annoys me"... hmm.. parts commonality... yeah, where would TVR, Ferrari, Lotus, Lambo etc etc be, if they hadn't used parts manufactured by others? Bankrupt. Welcome to the real world of car production.

"Bet the GT40 has new interior parts" yeah, cunningly... for a number of reasons... 1) the car is actually a different size to the GT, 2) legislative requirements 3) for some reason the majority of punters don't want old switchgear...

If the DB7 has any non Aston parts they are from Jaguars, which isn't a bad thing.

As reported elsewhere in the thread, the Focus was recently deemed the most reliable car on sale.

I think Fords have good build quality but that's irrelevant. The point is that Ford are big car company and their financial clout enable Aston Martin to spend more on their cars. Take the Vanquish, it used Ford's money and Astons expertise to get the best of both worlds.

Anyone seen that ad on the idiot lantern (copyright, CarZee, 2002) for the electric razor where the bloke 'shaves' the surface of a rather tasty looking XK8/R(can't recall which?) - it's a very dark shade of something and oozes classy menace.

I don't like Jags but I did like the look o' that. Makes me yearn, again, against my better judgement...

Btw, the only DB7 worth getting appears to be the new GT variant. For 2nd hand money, I'd probably get the big cat! (Or a mint 928GTS.)

I thought I'd finally got Coventry outta my system and then you go and uncover THAT! Looks incredible!

A real alternative to the uber Germans, perhaps?

Paramount can do some seriously bonkers stuff to Jags... not a fan of it all (some is a bit OTT for my tastes) but they go like stink.

I've driven 2 Ford cars yes, I've also been pasenger in a fair few more. Enough, thank god, to know what I don't like. Maybe I expect just that little more from a 160k car than you

They may come from same supplier but are they of the same quality(looks, feel, durabilty)? Not sure what the TUV award is but a car getting an award doesn't sway my opinion when I drive, ride or view a car. Just someone elses opinion. Spice Girls won awards for their music if I remember correctly, doesn't make it good though(bit extreme I know, before you post again).

Hire car, soon to be shagged? Oh, so YOU'RE mistreating it as well. Hardly a surprise that it's not in great nick, if people do that to them, is it?

I was issued with a brand new car delivered the day I picked it up so I expect it's in the best condition it's ever going to be in. I used the word "shagged" a bit freely in reference to my treatment of the car, spirited driving more apt, not much to do bar drive an auto in a straight line here.

You LOVE Aston? Jeez... daren't think what you'd say if you didn't like them. Yes I do love Aston Martin cars. What I do not like is paying 160K or so and being treated to a cheap interior. If the questions were asked about another marque I'd say the same. If Lamborghini use Audi parts for their interior I'd have no problem as the parts are well designed **IMO**. If you ever pay silly money for a car I hope you'll be annoyed with below par interior. Would it be such a huge financial burden for a comapany selling a car for 160k to make some things unique for their PAG??

"Bet the GT40 has new interior parts" yeah, cunningly... for a number of reasons... 1) the car is actually a different size to the GT, 2) legislative requirements 3) for some reason the majority of punters don't want old switchgear...

FFS! Yes I think they are going to use the same old stuff from the original car I was implying that as it is Ford's baby, they would produce new switches etc for the car rather than throw in stuff from other Fords.

I know alot of the big Aston collectors and they share a similar view(perhaps not as vicious in delivery)in regards to interior detailing. It's all very well talking about accepting these things if you don't pony up the dough but I think some effort can be made on Ford's behalf.

Ooops. Personally, I think the earlier DB7s are better to look at than to drive. Having been passenger in a couple I can't say what it was like to be behind the wheel but after getting out I felt cheated. The exterior promises so much but the ride delivers little **IMO**. Apparently the newer examples have put many things right but surely the cost of a newer one would give you many more buying options.

Personally, I'm not a Jag fan at all but I'd go for the XKR. Surely come resale time it will be much easier, not to mention servicing, parts.

Yep, still not answered. Anyone have a bloody DB7?

O.K. then here goes. The two earlier cars I drove were slow, crude, poorly built, OKish handling, cramped dreadful ergonomics and felt nothing like I imagined an Aston to be. The two later cars I drove were better built with better seats but even softer handling and frankly decided that the ownership experience probably ends when you open the drivers door. I so much wanted to fall in love and buy one as it was an ambition as were my TVRs. If you do start looking (and there must be good cars out there?) the guys at www.car-careworks.co.uk are very helpful and know their stuff about mods etc.

Graham, re; earlier post sorry didn't realise you wanted a rag top.

Hard to say, since I am not in the fortunate position of being able to do that. However, I have been lucky enough to drive (and benchmark) many cars including some exotica... and I recall that at the time, I was more impressed with the build quality of my humble Ford Escort, than of an Italian supercar...

They may come from same supplier but are they of the same quality(looks, feel, durabilty)?

Obviously the aesthetics of controls differ, but the same plastics and innards are used across MANY manufacturers - again it's cheaper to source ALL parts from one place, who produce items to one standard (it's just that Audi parts are perceived as being better since they have 4 rings on them, rather than a blue oval). The automotive industry is VERY heavily fought, with lots of company's in trouble - company's are cutting costs (hence increased parts commonality) in order to survive. Granted, some punters may not like it, but it's that or go under... what do you do?

Not sure what the TUV award is but a car getting an award doesn't sway my opinion when I drive, ride or view a car. Just someone elses opinion.

So if a car gets a poor review in a magazine... you'll still go and look at it? Fair enough - everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

Yes I do love Aston Martin cars. What I do not like is paying 160K or so and being treated to a cheap interior.
I can understand that, I think it's a very valid point...

Would it be such a huge financial burden for a comapany selling a car for 160k to make some things unique for their PAG??

Actually, it probably would. Any idea how much it costs to make and design a part - and the cost of testing that is associated to it.... the legal requirements etc etc?

It really is sink or swim time in the automotive industry. Very few players are doing well, and they are gaining market share. In the meantime it's use common parts or go under - it's that simple.

I was implying that as it is Ford's baby, they would produce new switches etc for the car rather than throw in stuff from other Fords.

Few bespoke bits... speedo and rev counter... the rest will look "familiar"... not sure about cup holders though!

I know alot of the big Aston collectors and they share a similar view(perhaps not as vicious in delivery)in regards to interior detailing. It's all very well talking about accepting these things if you don't pony up the dough but I think some effort can be made on Ford's behalf.

Again, I see your point, and I sympathise... but what would YOU do?

1) Make bespoke bits and raise the price considerably
2) Continue as now, using common parts and competitive prices
3) Fold the company.

Tough call...
