What Aston to buy ??
Discussion
OK looking at a Birthday present for someone in 2008 (I know a long time off but need to start now)
He loves Aston's
Has worked at David Browns (or will have hence the Aston and DB) for 44 years.
Wants a DB4 GT Zagato
So, apart from spending £150k plus, I have been looking at DB4's (from around £50k) or even DB6's.
But will this do it, or do I need to be scouring ad's for a DB4 GT Zagato that need's work doing on it, if such a thing exists.
HELP............

DB4 GT Zagato
They only ever made 19 original DB4 GT Zagato's. Any remaining mint models are probably worth in the region of $2.5mln each.
If money was no object it is definitely the object of my desire
If money is no object, try looking at Bonhams, Coys or Christies rather than Autotrader

Good God. I wish I had such generous friends
The only "cheap" DB Aston will be a DBS, yours from £10k upwards. Any DB4/5/6 is going to start at £50k minimum. Even DB4GTs are way over £200k and, as Shadytree says, a Zagato will cost millions.
Still, let us know what you want to spend and I'm sure we'll have fun trying to help you

You'll be doing well to get a DB4 for under £50K now. And a DB6 are not too far behind.
But dotn dismiss the DBS, DBS V8 or AM Vantage. Much more modern design, much more space inside (and a decent boot and true 4 seater) and much more modern driving experience. The DBS is not slow either. Slower then the DB6 yes, but not slow. They are great cars.
Of cours,e if you really want the Dabvid Brown experience then find a DB-Lagonda

No I know the DB4GT Zagato is never going to happen, but have seen DB4's from £50k to £150k in all guises, I don't really know much about them and used to think they all looked like herses when I was younger.
Another of his dreams would be a DB4 estate, but as far as I know only 1 was ever made for David Brown himself.
The newer, ie DB7 onwards (in his opinion) is a Ford / Jaguar top end car, beautiful in it's own right but not what he wants. The DBS has too much of an American influence.
But all great ideas.
Budget, erm, was hoping to be around the £50k mark rather than the other ends of the scale.
Possibly looking at a DB6 then.

I've been looking at Astons recently, unfortunately just out of interest as I have no hope of affording one in the near future... Personally I'm rather taken with the late 80's V8 and Vantage with the ronal wheels of course, a proper 'chaps' car and still a real Aston.
Price seems to be very much down to the seller, though generally speaking as has been stated, anything before a DB6 is well over 50K there are a variety of specialists..
Here are a couple of examples...
DB6 www.aston.co.uk/carsales_index/php/action/details/car/259
Couple more DB6's here www.runnymedemotorcompany.com/
Cheers Dan

Good call on the V8 proper aston. I purchased mine at a low price but have spent a ton of money rebuilding it. My advice is to buy the best one you can afford. This could mean buying the best V8 around for c50K and foregoing the DB5 at the same price that will swallow another 50K if you let it. PS. Any AMV8 from the OI onwards will look and handle superbly with the Ronals on. Good luck.
Please guys have a look at the latest Octane issue
There is a nice article that takes a realistic view on this amazing and fantastic car that is the 80s V8 Vantage. Also remember one thing: the new DB 9 is speed limited to 165 so a car 20 years older like the V8 VV can beat it (clearly not in acceleration).
For a coupe Vantage I would go for a manual, black interior and Cumberland grey exterior
simply perfect

Reading lots on the subject at the moment, seems to be some DB4 mk2's around for little money.
Have to raise the subject at some stage to see what he really wants.
really? where? I cannot find a DB4 for less then £60K. Even an engine is for sale for £20K, in non-Vantage spec. Do the best thing: buy a DBS. A better car in every respect, just as good looking, almost as fast, more comfortable, better heat insulation and very good value at the moment., And still very much a David Brown car. Almost the last of the line, in fact

What`s the bobby on early V8 Vantages? - I like the look of the earlier cars with the GKN alloys and there seem to be a few around the £35-45K mark. Is this the right price or are there compelling reasons to go for the later cars (bearing in mind they all seem to rot!)
Great cars, but you're right that they all rot. Very badly.
That's a fair price for one in fair condition. It will need money spending on it in the near future, probably. The very early one has bolted-on spoilers, the latter were blended. They were also better made, quicker (more powerful engine- espeically in X-pack configuration) andc handled better with the suspension and tyres. Dont dismiss the early ones, thoguh: great cars, and of the two I would have an early one.
Have a look here:

I have no connection with this website, but in my opinion its a great website and very informative.

DB4 series 2 £48,500
Well according to Octane January 2006, website doesn't seem to work properly though.

A good place to start looking is by going to the owners club site
www.amoc.org
on the left hand side there is cars for sale link. It doesn't have every Aston on sales, but it lists a lot of them. It breaks the list down into the different models.
There is also a very active Aston Martin forum available from the owners club site.
a good V8 Vantage was £55,000 2 years ago. Nowadays it takes £65,000 - £67,000 and prices are still creeping higher at the tune of £5,000 each year.
An 80s Vantage Volante last year at Bonhams reached a higher price than the "Prince of Wales" version well above £120,000k
Get a Vantage and if can, a Vantage Volante.
