Aston Martin to rival Ferrari 575M?

Stripped-out DB9 to be lightweight road-racer

Could Aston be planning to build a stripped-out DB9 to appear alongside the lightweight V8 Vantage -- and rival Ferrari's 575M?

Following the success of the DBRS9 GT3 racer launched earlier this year, the road version will be more user-friendly but with similar performance, according to a story on Auto Express's Web site.

It'll look much like the DBRS9, albeit shorn of the massive rear wing, and the body will be made of carbon composite panels. Seats will be racing buckets at the front, while the rears no longer exist, all for a weight-saving of some 250Kg.

The 550bhp 6.0-litre V12 in the DBRS9 remains so the lighter DB9 should hit 60mph in some four seconds. Expect to pay £125,000.

Aston Martin dismissed the story as "pure speculation", saying that it couldn't comment on unannounced products. However, a spokeswoman did say that "if you know anything about Aston Martin's VH (Vertical Horizontal) architecture", you could extrapolate to a number of outcomes.

The VH architecture is a platform for future Astons and consists of lightweight aluminium extrusions, precision castings, and pressings, with an underframe bonded with aerospace adhesives and mechanically fixed with self-piercing rivets.

Auto Express didn't mention its sources for the story...

I don't know if this has any bearing but I've seen much meaner looking versions of the DB9 hooning about near Milton Keynes a few weeks ago. I presumed they were just planning a slight 'S' state of tune but It appears they are more serious than that.

Challenging the 575M? Isn't that what the Vanquish is for?

If they make this car it will really force us to face the question - is it possible to have too much of a good thing ... ? My knees are weak with the thought of this car.

I would suggest that the much "meaner" version of Db9 you saw around Milton Keynes were in fact Vanquish S from Newport Pagnell.

All sounds like clutching at straws in the dark. To be fair to Auto Express they do a good job at following the principles of Nostrodamus (if you make enough predictions, some of them will be bound to materialise!) A lighter " breathed on" V8 does seem a logical progression but this article neither confirms it or gives any real information.

It wouldn’t be competing against the 575 as that’s due for replacement next year with the Ferrari 600 Imola with a 6.0 litre, V12 pumping out 600bhp as standard. The car is basically a shorter version of the current 612 which allows it lots of luggage space and a Pininfarina designed lightweight space-frame aluminium body.

To be fair I think the design is sublime and I say that as some one who doesn’t usually like the way Ferrari’s look:

AM would need to kick down a bit to make a car to truly rival that.

Isn't this what the DBRS9 is all about and which was displayed at Le mans last year?

Ummm... not to me it isn't - surely that's a played-with Scragliatti isn't it, and I think they are rather ugly. Sorry Rich...

Oh god, it looks like one of the designers liked the 575's bonnet scoop so much he went out and bought a chainsaw...
