Happy Friday everyone. Trying to solve another issue on the 2012 V8 Vantage S I got last week. When driving on city roads or any minor bump in the road, the rear suspension sounds like I’m having passionate love on an old motel bed. I’m talking VERY squeaky. Like I’m walking around an old haunted castle with wooden floors. The previous owner installed coil overs.

Anything I can do to remedy this at home with a basic tool set and some grease? It’s pretty embarrassing to bring passengers along to see my shiny new toy and it immediately sounds like an old sh*tbox

Thanks

Welcome. I have a year older V8S, had it 9 yrs. Had many suspension issues. I'm on the 3rd set of coilovers. How many miles? what's the usage profile? What's the service and MOT history? has it been standing?

The V8S was originally fitted with decent quality passive Bilstein sports suspension. There was no obvious need to replace it. A previous owner has for some reason fitted something else. Why? What has been fitted? The issue is described as 'squeaks'. In this case, just buy the biggest can of WD40 you can and squirt it liberally, absolutely everywhere on your shocks especially the top and bottom. get underneath, get it on the coils, shocks, and deep into the bushes.

If this works, it might be temporary, but has identified the issues. Then, just use a more permanent solution that will still be in a can but cost a lot more.

Note, depending on what has been fitted, such as early Nitron R1, sold by some unscrupulous specialists but not designed for road cars, if the issue is developing clunks and knocks then this may be a whole different problem and more difficult to resolve.

Try to work out what is fitted.

My guess would be control arm bushes. It's difficult getting any sort of lubricant in and also a pain trying to find out which one it is. Ultimately you need to get each corner in the air and push the hub up and down while your head is in the wheel well. Due to having a shock absorber attached it's very difficult to do so unless you have some decent lifting gear to balance it all on you may be best placed to remove the shock absorber/coilover so that you can easily move the assembly up and down.

This sounds like a very similar issue I had with my 2016 N430, I could replicate the noise just by pushing hard on the near side back of the car. It turned out to be the rear brake disc stone guard coming into contact with the lower suspension control arm. The clearance is very small.

Have someone try to gentle pull the lower part of the stone guard towards the disc while you push up and down and see if the noise disappears!

It's often caused by ageing anti roll bar mounting bushes.
