You need to pair the immobiliser and the body contril module to any new key. Two seperate bits. One is to remote unlock, the other to start the car when the ECU is pressed into the socket. One of the two can be done without the card (though I forget which) - though in isolation it's useless as you won't be able to either lock or start the car.
To do it properly, you absolutely need the card. I know BR can do it, but they still need the card. Only two keys can be fully coded to a car at any given time and sometimes a new or later body control module cannot be paired with earlier keys.
A new glass ECU (key) with card is £750 and a new plastic key with card is about half that - but they are the exact same internals. Therefore if you still have or can get hold of a 2nd hand glass key, you can pop the internals from a plastic key in to save cash.
At last, as of this year there is finally a decent AM indie in Kent, Quantum Works near the Hop Farm, between Maidstone and Tonbridge.
