Realistic Expectations?
Discussion
Hi,
Unfortunately my father recently suffered a heart attack and although he has recovered well, has decided to sell his 2006 V8 Vantage as it's juts a bit too much for him to use anymore.
It's a manual, 4.3ltr in silver with black interior.
The car is mechanically sound (as far as I can tell) and has just passed it's MOT (with advisories for the rear tyres). It has never actually failed an MOT in its lifetime, always been garaged and only covered about 1000 miles in the last 4 years.
It has 20,500 miles on the clock.
Bad points;
Alarm System Service Required - looks like the batteries need replacing in the box in the rear wheel arch. Easy enough job. £150 for new battery pack.
Mirror arms need powder coating - the drivers side is missing paint. Had a quote for £100 to re powder coat both so they match each other.
Tiny bit of "bobbling" above passenger door handle - takes a very keen eye to see. Less than the size of a 5p peice. (Best left alone I think).
Sat nav screen needs new part - same old issue as with a lot of these. £35 plastic part easy job.
Wheels need a refurb - £360 all in by Amazing Alloys in Telford.
Detailing - £240 all in by CDS Shrewsbury to get all the aluminium shining, paint looking it's best etc.
So the question is....do I bother doing all the above before selling it?
I'm looking for £25,000 for the car as it is. Throwing a grand at it might be pointless at this price.
Am I better just leaving it as it is and selling it with the bits that need doing so someone else can sort them out themselves and to their standards?
It's a lovely car and a great example but it's also something that makes my father quite uspet every time he sees it, so it needs to go sooner rather than later.
Any advice welcome.
Thanks in advance.
Paul.

A warning light reffering to a flat battery pack in an alarm module, and a sat nav screen that doesn't flip up (which no one wants it to anyway as it was useless in 2006, and hasn't aged well) wouldn't put me off buying a V8 Vantage for £25k with 20k on the clock, but I appreciate the input and I guess it's different for everyone.
It's interesting as I'd have thought the cosmetics far more important.
Each to their own I guess.
Thanks for the reply. Much appreciated.

First of all, I’m sorry to hear about your father and how upsetting it must be for him and also for you. I am pleased to hear he is recovering well though.
It almost doesn’t matter what you advertise it for, people will always want something off. Maybe put it up as is, and hopefully viewers will be pleasantly surprised and happy for a bit of money off. You can afford to drop a grand and not be any worse off financially but still save you self the effort.
Worse case, it doesn’t sell and then you’ll maybe have to get the work done. But i understand why you want it gone asap.
Good luck with the sale.

Wheels and minor bodywork wouldn't bother me as I know what a wheel refurb and detail is going to cost.
Any sat nav and alarm issues are making me think the worst and that these are symptoms of wider electrical issues.
Now prospective buyers who know the model and common faults will probably not care, but you've narrowed the market.
I get that with your father being ill it's probably less the money fix things than the time to take the car in.
But having a look on AT and you'd be pricing your car £5k under similar cars so someone will take a punt I'm sure. I'd be telling interested parties not to be rocking up thinking they're going to get it for less than asking price though.

In terms of the bits you described, alot really depends on personal preferences.
For me when I was searching for mine the main things was ofc making sure that the car was mechanically and electricly sound ( however I always knew that I was going to get a pre purchase inspection done, thus my ressearch did not extend beyond mot history)
So really the focus was on paint and trim condition. I would say remember the initial wow factor so in my opinion I would say do the detail I think if you pay half of that cost you will achieve considerable quality finish, equally if you have time and a garage do it yourself over a span of two evenings I would say it is quite a theraputic experience.
Re sat nav, for sake of 35 quid and 30 min work or maybe an hour with a YouTube video I would get that done too.
Alloys and powder coat I think is ok to leave, part because it is bit more costly and possibly tad more time consuming if you need to shift the car.
The alarm warning I'm not sure if it's different on Vantage but I though that sometimes it goes away but again just be honest in an advert and say pre purchase inspection is welcome, to put potential future owner be comfortable that you are not selling an abused motor.
Good luck with the sale!

Personally I'd get it perfect and sell it as a mint example it's what I'd buy ??
I agree. I'd be surprised if a detail at 250 is actually a detail too and not just an advanced clean. With that low mileage I'd be tempted to get it fixed, looking lovely and trying collecting cars.I hope you're Dad gets better quickly too. Its not nice when its out turn to worry about them.
I think due to the low mileage it would sell at that price regardless of a few bits. But you may get over 30 if it’s sorted.
However I’ve had mine up for two weeks at 27.5 with only a few bits of interest
Mine is higher mileage but excellent and has a few enhancements but the market is pretty slow I think.

I'm in the market for a v8 vantage ATM, the wheels, wing mirror arms and paint bubbling wouldn't put me off at your price point, but the sat nav and warming light would. I'm not mechanically minded and I'd be thinking "if these are simple cheap fixes why haven't you done them pre sale". I wouldn't see them as wear and tear (like the cosmetic issues) but as faults that the previous owner hadn't fixed, which would make me wonder what else hadn't been fixed.
Hope that was helpful, other more mechanically minded buyers would probably think differently.
