New to me Vantage V8 - couple of queries
Discussion
Hi all
Just collected my 2021 Vantage V8 manual and loving it so far.
I have a couple of questions which I wonder if I can get some help with:
1. the engine note is quite muted. From sight - lack of info - but looking at it, I seem to have quicksilver carbon exhaust tips with the back box. it's hard to see much as the rear diffuser covers it all up. But despite that it's muted. Should there be a remote controller with the backbone? The car was owned in Edinburgh Reg SK21 VFU - Aston Martin in Edinburgh have serviced the car but they tell me they didn't install the quicksilver so I will try and find out where it was installed. I don't want to go down the opf delete pipe route if its going to make it obnoxious and too loud
2. the car has done 5k miles and is on its original P zeros. I have the ps4s on my other cars, are these the tyre of choice for the Aston too or should I go with something else?
I have a trip to the south of France in a couple of weeks and will be taking the Aston.

Unfortunately I cant offer any advice on the Quicksilver except to say I would have no worries about returning her to "standard" as although the noise is glorious its certainly not anti social . The Michelins on the other hand I have some experience of and I do believe they improved things . Of course I said this on some Forum and a fellow Owner popped up saying he had done likewise and felt he had wasted his money . Lee down at HWM who does a bit of racing said the Michelin were a "game changer" when it came to the Vantage and after some disappointment with the P Zeros on an earlier Porsche I decided to try them . Under acceleration coming out of roundabouts where the P Zeros tended to momentarily lose traction was the main change I found along with less road noise . I later sold the 20 plate Vantage and bought a 21 plate in Divine Red this time sticking with the P Zeros . My ultimate conclusion was that the Michelins improved things but as my fellow Owner earlier intimated the P Zeros are perfectly adequate . Lovely car you have bought , I am anxious to hear how you get on especially with the manual box and more pictures especially the interior are very welcome .
As you report, the previous owner appears to have had an aftermarket silencer fitted, presumably to improve the noise characteristic. What has been done is evidently not to your aural taste.
You say you don’t want to remove the particulate filters - a post 2020MY addition which further quietened the AMG-engined Vantage acoustic signature, the post 2018 (or ‘old new’ as they are now called in this corner of PH) Vantage already slightly muffled as a result of being turbocharged.
Unusually, aftermarket silencers do not usually improve the noise of an Aston. The OEM system is usually the best, being factory engineered for the car to be both fruity and quiet when needed due to the exhaust valve which is most often not present on aftermarket systems which can also boom and resonate. Your assumption that it will become obnoxious if you remove the opf may not be completely unfounded, but for the cost and given it’s reversible it should be worth a try. You will still have turbo chargers and two sets of catalysts to take the edge off.
If that doesn’t suit, the best course of action is to return the silencer (back box) to the OEM switchable unit (leaving the opf delete). You can then make it noisier by installing either the manual or remote switch which allows you to open or close the valves as you want.
