Both are known for their amazing exhaust sound. For those who have owned or driven both, how do they compare? And, while we are at it, how does the driving experience compare?

Looking forward to your thoughts!

I agree 2 of the best sounding cars, ever, really smile

Of course the 355 has that flat plane crank wail, but the Aston V8 is not typical of what you’d get from Mercedes, American ford, Chevy etc….it absolutely sings at top end.

Hugely biased but I genuinely believe it: the 4.3 trumps the 4.7 for noise all day long. Much rawer, snarly and metallic/zingy. Add some hi-flow cats and it’s up there with best cross plane noise you can get. 2.5 years into mine and I cannot get enough of the noise it makes.

There’s a video on YouTube I’ve just tried to find but couldn’t, of a 4.3 V8 leaving a car meet followed by a 360 rather than 355 - Ferrari more high pitched and a bit more tuneful, but the Aston is effing epic.

The induction noise of the Aston coming towards you at full chat then taken over by the exhaust as it passes, is unreal

Owned a manual 355gts for 4 years, also owned a 4.3 manual V8v roadster for 5 years and I’m now 2 years into a 4.7 V8vS. The Ferrari I thought at the time sounded epic under hard acceleration through the gears but not so slowing down working through the box. I can honestly say my favourite sound is the S, it’s ss2 with twin clutch and BR remap, really like it, driving 20mph round town, going rapidly up or down sounds awesome. All IMHO of course!

I had a 355 Berlinetta with a decat tubi exhaust and 4.3 V8V with 200 cell sports cats (and the fuse for the valves removed)

Think I'd sum up them up as High Pitched Frenetic Scream v's Brutal Beefy Burble. Both were great and the different exhaust noises suited the different nature of the cars.

I had a bog-standard 1995 355GTS about 20 years ago, and I have a 4.3 V8V now.

With a standard exhaust, the 355 sounded a bit ‘flat’ and not very tuneful. I only had it for two years, so I never achieved my plan to fit a Tubi.

My V8V is also standard, and the exhaust is definitely not flat….

I have a theory that the biggest difference is from inside the car. With the 355, there was an engine between the tailpipes and the driver, which killed a lot of the exhaust sound. I would imagine the 355 sounded much better from outside, than it did from the driver’s seat. The Vantage just has the rear window between the tailpipes and the driver, so far more of the noise gets through.

For me, the Aston is more tuneful. It goes from a classic V8 rumble at low revs, to a howl at the redline. The 355 is more of a busy mechanical noise most of the time, although it was fun to take it round to 8,500rpm

I have been intrigued by the 4.3 / 4.7 sound difference, because I think the 4.7 MY 2009 and 2010 cars, have an identical exhaust system to the 4.3 (no manifold cats and a just a single pair of dual matrix cats).
I would be interested to know what makes the difference to the sounds. Certainly I think the 4.7 is quieter.

As for the AM V8 sound compared to the American V8 cars. Is the difference due to a different firing order ?
The traditional American sound gives the impression of low revving, but not the Vantage V8.

My response is biased by the fact that I have just purchased a 2016 N430 which has an epic soundtrack. One of videos I really enjoyed is of Henry Catchpole taking a drive in an N430 on the Old Military Road in Scotland https://youtu.be/xkAT82-R0S8?si=6pRTEoqf9M1b1KIS

Did the 2009 4.7 immediately sound quieter ? I never noticed a difference when I test drove at the time, both factory versions, no other mods.

I know the later 2012 onwards 4.7 has a secondary set of cats that were not present in the 4.3 and these really dampened the sound .The first mod I did when I changed from a 4.3 to a 2012 4.7, was to fit a pair of replacement cat pipes and then the 4.7 sounds just as good cool

When I first had my 2009 4.7 Coupe, I bought a remote to control the exhaust valves.
Could not hear any difference (inside the car) between valves open and shut at the higher revs.

Once the cat 'adjustment' was implemented and 3-way switch fitted, an inner Vantage was released. Just perfect now. Quiet or noisy, at the touch of a switch.
