Grand Tour DB9
Discussion
I watched it last night. They got hold of one of the earliest volantes and heavily modified it for the desert.
A bit of a shame the old DB9 (perhaps as expected) threw up so many electrical issues, and they made such a meal of them (for comedy effect) instead of just sorting out what really looked like battery/low voltage issues sooner. Still, it did better mechanically than some may have thought, a road V12 crawling up some rocky terrain at 2mph in 40C heat without overheating more than it did.
I have to agree with so many other more general comments that the general format and at least two of the presenters are increasingly not aging well. I understand that this one is their penultimate jaunt, it seems they’ve picked the right time to call it a day. That that trio have provided us all much car-based entertainment and laughs over the years goes without saying, but sadly nothing lasts forever.

I wasn’t sure if that was the supercharger whine or Clarkson’s signature noise. Or maybe they were harmonising.
I enjoyed it. That was one ropey DB9 as reflected by the price but it made it. Yay.
P.S., interesting he had access to AMDS.
I was also very surprised he had access to AMDS- a small glimpse of the enormous team and support that runs behind the three of them. I enjoyed it. That was one ropey DB9 as reflected by the price but it made it. Yay.

Thought the DB9 was very cheap. Sounds as if it was quite ropey.
Put my anxiety about a long European road trip in some context.
I know many love to criticise but I quite enjoyed it. Simple things…
You know what you are going to get with these three. My boys 16 and 20 love them ... I always find them entertaining. The DB9 looked very ropey however, I would have thought the Maserati would have given the most problems, lets face it Jaguar and Maserati dont have the best reliability records. All three cars did very well though given the environment.
The DB9 is back in the UK and appears on their DriveTribe Youube channel.

At least 2 for that money on AutoTrader that look quite nice, so surprised with the GrandTour requirements they couldn't find one even cheaper, they aren't going to be concerned about paint, service history or wanting a warrantee. But considering the state of the roads in this country I can see the appeal of this genre of car, it's like doing the Paris-Dakar going to Tesco.

Cheapest Volante I can see on AT is 15% more expensive than they paid. Prices have softened since last March when it appears that was filmed. Which ones are you looking at?But considering the state of the roads in this country I can see the appeal of this genre of car, it's like doing the Paris-Dakar going to Tesco.

Great fun to script a visit to the embassy, just to be able to include a Ferrero Rocher joke.
If you don't subscribe to Prime, it is still on YT this morning, therefore available for all to see (probably briefly).
A long film, but am now going to watch the last half hour (coffee break).

Wouldn't surprise me if they brought mechanics along with specific model knowledge. Small change when in thr grand scheme of things I'd have thought.
I watched it last night and it's the usual enjoyable nonsense. However, I did wince at the treatment that poor DB9 received. Continuing to drive it without addressing the overheating and electrical problems was painful to witness.
Just fix the damn car, it's more than capable of operating in that ambient temperature if it's given the chance to work properly.
