Forgive me but coming new to buying my first AM. I was looking at buying a DB9 circa 2008/2009. I have seen a really nice Vanquish Mk 1 more money but what the hell. I want it to daily circa 10k per year. I’m 55 and just feel I don’t want to leave in a garage but use it before I drop dead or the woke mob say I can’t drive it.

How much more drama is a Vanquish Mk 1 in comparison to a DB9? Would it be easier to daily a Avro Vulcan?

I think a DB9 would be easier to use as a daily driver . The gen 1 VQ doesn't like heavy stop start traffic ( it will cope but it isn't much fun ) .
I know which I prefer to look , but that is subjective. I've never considered a DB9 mind.

For daily driver use, and if you're contemplating spending more money, I would consider a later model DB9. Seems like Aston made little improvements every year and a big step up in 2013.

Or get a Mk1 Vanquish with the manual box put in it? Got to be the best way to improve the car for the outlay?

Don’t know what you’re doing ? Don’t want it in a garage every month? Want to daily it?

DB9, all the way. The latest model you can find.

To daily drive, do not go the Avro Vulcan route smile

Latest DB9 you can afford, or even better, a DBS of the same era.

You won’t regret either of those. I’d go FSH from a recognised Aston specialist or main dealer. Only go private or non specialist dealer if you can get a full third party inspection.

The Gen 1 Vanquish is a great car, but probably needs to be owned and used as a limited miles classic.

Manual gearbox as an improvement is debatable .
Partly the issue is the long gearing - 60mph odd in first .
But they cope , it’s just not what the car likes doing .

Check out Bamford Rose videos on YouTube.
For me your requirements would suit the DB9 much more and get as late a car as your budget will go.
The 1st hen Vanq is a l9vely thing but also more prone to throwing big bills your way. I also understand parts availability are more of an issue too. My perception (& its only that) is the mk1 Vanq is a garaged sunny Sunday low mileage type of car not perhaps suited to daily work.

BR above have lots of content on both models for you to check out on line with YouTube though he can sometimes sound like every car is a money pit and is about to suffer a catastrophic failure. They won't but he will give good guidance for you.

Actually probably best not, he'll never buy one!

It would be like watching 'When Holidays Go Terribly Wrong' just when you were wondering if you should go on holiday or not.

That's what I find with Bamford Rose too , harbingers of doom . DB9 all the way and as late as you can afford .

Agreed thats why I tried to reflect his somewhat 'negative' attitude in my last paragraph.
His info is generally rather insightful though which is why it's a shame he dwells on the potential issues way too much and spends less time on the positives.
A late DB9 is not a bad jumping off point for a first Aston. A gen 1 Vanquish would require a lot more bravery

My first aston was a db9.2 (MY13 onwards). I bought it because I wanted something as a daily use car, not to keep in a garage. It did an excellent job during my 6 year tenure and I would recommend one if you plan that kind of regular usage. A good one is generally very reliable.

The db9 is definitely a better daily driver. I had a 2010 and it was excellent. If you are wanting a car with possible appreciation then the Vanquish 1 should give you this. They have their quirks but a well sorted one would be excellent. I admire them whenever I see one. I eventually opted for a Vanq. 2.

10k a year lol you will be through a clutch in no time on a vanquish unless it's just been done and they are like 5k a pop

I imagine DB9 owners will say DB9 and Vanq owners say Vanq! I had both and I'd go with 8 speed Vanq. But try both, for me the Vanq just felt a lot more "special" and I actually think is that little bit more gorgeous

I like the BR stuff and it was helpful when I was looking for my Vantage. I may be wrong but I seem to recall a Vanquish review which was particularly emphatic about the ability for those cars to initiate open wallet surgery?

I think he is referring to the gen 1 Vanq which is a whole different kettle of fish to the gen 2.
Comparing a DB9 to the gen 2 Vanq would be a no contest for most with rhe Vanq probably wiinning everytime. However against the gen 1 car, then the 9 is probably a much safer bet
