Just bought it. Have not read the full article yet but it is very very very very positive.

Couple of snippets.....not direct quotes....the sound of the engine makes the hairs on the back of your neck faint as appose to simply stand on end and it's a car dedicated to the provision of pure driving pleasure!!!!

There are actually two reports....one for the car itself and then a 911 shoot out. The 911 wins the shootout but the verdict says no one would question your decision to go for the AMV8.

All in all I would say that it's a fantastic review and all of us on the wait list should be very happy indeed.

FYI...Adam Towler did the shoot-out and David Vivian the test drive report.

How is it that you can ALWAYS buy a copy of Autocar in the shops on a Tuesday, but my subscription copy is often late (ALWAYS late after a Bank Hol).

I've got an extra days holiday today too, so I may just have to pop out and buy a copy.

Edited to say: Glad they liked it

Rich , I think you're missing the point somewhat. You don't get the Aston ethos. It's not about the V8 being better quicker or more bhp than Porsche. Porsche has spent 30 years developing the 911 into what it is today. I feel it's more about Aston Martin building the best car they have ever made and a car that can compete with the best in the World.
Then in my (biast) opinion there's no contest. A mass produced Porsche seen regularly in the City, that looks like every other Porsche built over the past 10 years. Or a beatifully sculptured piece of automotive porn with more style and cudos than Sean Connery's little finger.

I happened to be @ Bedford the day they were tracking the AMV8 for this comp test; it does indeed sound the nuts Drifts nicely too 911 may be technically the better car but for me the AMV8 is by far the more desirable of the pair; this should win it any test going IMHO.

Shady.....such a beautiful, elegant and eloquent response!!! It's true....the Aston is about heart and soul, the 911 is all head!!!

I posted something on the AMOC forums afew months ago that the AMV8 had to be a bloody good car to tempt owners away from 911's which no matter what they now say was the target market for AM.

It got removed I think, it seemed the powers that be on those forums really dont like any reasoned debate on the true merits of a car.

If you buy a car soley on the image and kudos, then surely you fall into the trap which you are already taking shots at others for. The car cannot stand on looks alone, and you know it. It has to be damned good.. Everytime I get near this point I am told I just dont get it.. Thats the Emps new clothes mind speak isnt it.

I get what a car is, a sports car.. I know what I want from it.. They cant promise it for 2 years and then not offer it without being questioned. (early days yet)

Aston will have an extra 3000 customers a year from now on to keep happy, some of them are going to be more demanding than they are used to. Alot are coming from Porca's and they expect a car to be bullet proof, great to drive and quick with it.

The loyal Aston heads will excuse them and accept anything with a badge on..I hope they have got it right, I really dont want to feel like i have wasted the time waiting.

Rich

No one is buying this car on image and kudos alone. The AC review says it's a great car...period. They may prefer it as a sports car to the 911 but they also say you'll feel special every time you drive the Aston. Also...on AMOC today is a post from a 996 owner who says he could never justify the £30K to move to a 997 but the £40K to the AMV8 is easy.

I think you are getting upset that the Aston did not beat the 911 in the article and you are therefore concerned that the Aston is not as "good" as you expected. From the article in AC and Sunday Times it sounds more than good enough for me as a pure driving machine and that's before you add the fact of how special it will make you feel.

Rich , you just don't get it mate. (repeated again)
Porsche has been the benchmark industry standard in that sector for the last ten/twenty years, and rightly so. So naturally that is how all the crtics measure a new sports car. I don't believe an Aston dealer or executive at AML will get on their knees to a Porsche owner, preaching it's better.
If you turn round to Aston's and start whining that it's not as good as this or not as good as that. Then the simple answer is buy a Porsche, we don't want your business.
I don't own Aston for the name, badge, or image, I just love the history and romatacism attached to the mark.
I know you love Porsche, but you just won't ever get the same feeling as me when I press that starter button. It's like my blood turns Aston racing green.
I really hope you don't understand this one day, but alas, I feel you won't.

Gary,

I understand your point I really do..

Im coming froma slightly tweaked 996 turbo which I know is going to be an unfair comparison.. But it still has to convince me enough to hand over the cash.

That's why he didn't go black!!!

Edited to say......Rich, I understand your dilemma. For me there is just no doubt that the Aston is the car for me - green veins like Shady. I do not envy you not being sure as it makes your decision difficult whereas mine is sooooo easy!!

Ignore the driving experience for a minute, which I can confirm is good enough, and look at the image side of things.

Would you prefer a 10 a penny Porsche or a bit of exclusivity ?

If you think Porsches are common here, head for Germany !!!

I know what I would go for.

Not biased at all, honest.....:P

I love the Porsche, does the job so well, but they are nothing 'special'. Just a very good tool.
