A question for owners and fans of the VH era (2004-2018) cars. We are coming up to 7 years since the launch of the 1st ‘2nd century’ car, the DB11, and nearly 5 years since launch of the replacement Vantage and halo DBSS. What’s the general opinions of you guys who can now maybe be referred to as a brand new generation of ‘traditionalists’ possibly remaining a little bit wedded to the beautiful but quirky old n/a cars with slightly dodgy electrics, funny keys, naff rotating displays, heavy manual boxes often with strange clunky automation and predominantly the older gen 6-speed slushers?

We all have our favourites from the era, be it Rapide, DB9 or Vantage, DBS or Vanquish, V8 or V12, auto, manual or sportshift, S or non S, earlier or later styling. We can include the original Vanq even though that’s more of a Newport Pagnell car.

Sufficient time has now passed now to form a sober view on their modern turbocharged replacements with facelifts imminent. It’s also true that many, out of desire for something newer, more modern and under warranty, already made the change. What’s the view of that ‘generation’ of AM enthusiasts, won over by the Callum/Fisker designs on the 2nd Century Reichman cars?

How many of you would buy one? For AML to continue, in addition to all the ‘new, younger’ customers they will need to persuade owners and fans of the older cars to one day buy one of the newer ones both to keep sales going and maintain used values. With that in mind, which of the ‘new’ models would you consider owning/upgrading to?

DB11 V8/Volante
DB11 V12/AMR
Vantage V8 /Roadster
Vantage V12
DBSS/Volante
DBX/707

If not, why not? - they are all, in general, much better cars. Much has been made of the looks, but in my view the issue seems to be that for some reason they don’t seem to photograph well. In ‘the flesh’ they are all stunning.

Good question.

DB11: the body is a great design - it’s grown in me hugely. It would have to be the V12 though.

Vantage V8: still find the front end mildly repulsive.

Vantage V12: much better looking than the V8. But for the price tag, yes, I’d consider this.

DBS: the best looking of the post-VH cars by a long way, and my pick of the bunch. But they are still a lot of money and I’m not convinced the extra cash is worth the upgrade from what I have.

DBX: I quite like these and 550 would be plenty. I find it slightly difficult to see them for what they are, which is a sort of super-GT car that happens to be upright. I like that I can shove crap in the back of our RR and do a tip run without caring - I can’t see myself ever doing that in a DBX.

My main two issues with the post VH era cars are first, I hugely prefer NA engines to turbos and secondly the interiors. The newer car still look to me a bit of a mess inside.

DB11 V8 Volante. But I won't have one because (a) it's too much to keep tied up in a car, and (b) it would have to be my only car, and Astons need to be weekend cars in my experience. DB9 will be as far up the tree as I go.

I own a 2014 Vantage V12S, bought it when it was three months old. Before that a V8VS for about 9 months.

Desperately wanted to like the new Vantage. But with the Merc engine, questionable styling, Lime Essence, and, most of all expense, I’ve not been tempted. I went to a launch party back then. New Vantage in the show room was £160k and I was offered £65k trade in for my V12S……needless to say I politely declined. I’m pretty sure my V12S is worth more today than the very same new V8 is now.

Looking at the other cars. I test drove a DBSS with an open mind. Too big, didn’t feel any faster than my V12S and didn’t sound as good. DB11 is basically the same but a bit less of everything.

DBX. Lovely car, have been driven in one. Very impressive. But, if I wanted a luxury SUV, I’d buy a Range Rover.

New V12 Vantage. So much better in the flesh than in the pictures. But I prefer the one I have. Plus really expensive.

I love the brand and cars, and am in an active section of AMOC. Zero politics involved. Of the 20-30+ regular attendees, all but three or four cars are previous generation or NP. There’s one new Vantage and three DB11s. I believe these are the first Astons their respective owners have bought. All to the best of my knowledge are delighted with their cars. As they should be.

So have AM alienated their existing customer base with the new cars? Have they attracted scores of new buyers to the brand? Hmmmmmm…………

A couple of years ago I went the other way, and added a 1972 AM Vantage to the garage. Absolutely brilliant, despite the inevitable oil leaks. I guess I’m just getting old smile

I have a DB11 Volante which I bought new in 2020 when AM were doing terrific discounts on new cars. I replaced my 2005 DB9 Volante and the DB11 is a significant upgrade. I would have preferred a V12 in the DB11 Volante (Purely because of the V12 sound) but only the V8 is available and the DBS was above my price limit and I prefer the front grille on the DB11.

Much has been said about the V8 Mercedes Benz engine but I have found it to be a powerful and reliable engine and gives a nice sound across the entire rev range, although it is different to the bark of the N/A V12 in the DB9. The exhaust note has been well tuned for the DB11 by AM and it does still sound great but different.

The ride and handling of the DB11 is superb and is much tighter than my old DB9 and the infotainment is a significant upgrade.

The fit and finish in the DB11 is much better than the DB9 and 'touchwood' I have had no issues with my DB11 in the 3 years that have owned it, so it is very reliable and doesn't have the electrical quirks that my DB9 had.

I think the styling of the DB11 Volante is great and takes cues from some of the higher end VH cars, so overall, although I miss some aspects of my DB9 I am glad I made the change.

The DB11 has REALLY grown on me recently, lovely design when you study it. Imposing. But too "GT-y" for my kind of car.

I really quite like the current Vantage...... from the back. The front and interior are just stupidly ugly. What were they thinking.

If an upcoming redesign renders the front end like the DB11, and changes the interior to classic swooping elegant lines and less like some sort of disgusting Balenciaga training shoe..... i'd have one next (as a VH era Vantage owner currently.)

I imagine AML were trying for a younger audience with the new Vantage.. i'm in that demographic and it's a massive fail for me currently.

I had one of the new V8 Vantages and would have / did considered the V12 special but only at a more sensible price.
With an interior that ( for me ) always looked better in the previous version if upon facelift this appeared along with perhaps a redesigned front ( I was agnostic about the Hunter grill on mine ) and had the V12 ( but at the same uplifted figure as the previous gen differential ) then would definitely still consider.
Not bothered about the DB 11 as such as doesn’t really fill a needed gap for me.
My GT8 is just approaching 6 years old and tbh as it stands difficult to see me replacing it.

DB11 is the most "classically" styled of the bunch. Like the extra space it has over the new vantage roadster for road trips and such, but wish it was available with the v12... Starting to see some decent depreciation on these used which makes them more attractive than the DBSS and V8 mk2.

Vantage roadster with the grill front is quite pretty, but interior is a bet meh. That being said, if they had offered the current V8 roadster with a manual I probably would have tried to buy one, but what's the point if they are auto and I can buy a "more expensive" db11 volante used for quite a bit less.

DBS is striking and has lots of presence but so expensive even used. Prefer the OHMSS grill version.

V12V has gotten some not so great reviews. If i was going to spend that sort of money I'd probably go with the DBS.

Whatever happened to the reborn "Vanquish" that was supposed to come?

Have deliveries started of the new V12V Roadster? Not seen any reviews etc yet.

So sorry, but my answer is none.

I am very fortunate to own an Aston Martin and it provides everything that I need.
'Upgrading' to any of those models is an option, but why would I want to ?
I cannot think of a benefit.

I can only go by comparing what I currently have to the newer models. So, for me, I will stick with my 2015 Vanquish as it's a stunningly beautiful car inside and out. I have upgraded the infotainment with Carplay though.

At my age, 71, it will be a keeper for some time yet.
As for our other car, my wife has a 2015 Range sport which is lovely.

Your question of replacing my 2016 V12V, not going to happen! As to which one of the new cars I would purchase, I recently added a DBX707 to my garage. So that is my answer. I do like the DB11 AMR, but with my recent purchase don't currently have room in the budget. I could see adding one to the garage down the road.

Owned a 550 DBX and now a 707. Was interested in a DBS SL and Vantage F1 but having something practical for the incoming baby meant I had to “compromise” with a DBX.

I’m 32 fyi and had my first “supercar” at 28, so I’m certainly Astons target market with the newer range.

However I think the DBX is the best modern Aston. I’ve driven every vantage, db11 and dbs variant. And as much as I really wanted a vantage, the £150k price tag did not seem worthwhile, same with the DBS SL, especially with that depreciation. The interiors just felt about 10 years older than they were which for cars starting at £150k felt wrong.

The DB11 is a sweet spot in terms of pricing, but v8 only for volante and generally softer driving than either the vantage and DBS moved me away from having one as a second car.

I bought a new Toyota Supra instead of a vantage for a very occasional track car and pocketed the £100k difference between that an a Vantage. I actually cancelled my order for a Vantage F1 back in June.

I’m of the opinion that I’d rather spend more on the car I’ll use frequently rather than driving something mundane daily to only enjoy my “nice” car occasionally. Although I could have my DBX and another Aston as a second car if I wished(sorry not trying to flex just being matter of fact).

I truly believe the “next gen” of cars will be up there among the best like the 707 is right now.

That’s what I’m holding out for, oh and for the share price to follow suite!

To answer the OP, none of the VH cars appeal to me really. The vantage V12S is nice but they all seem so similar and whilst simpler and more elegant in design, I’m sure the driving dynamics would fall short of the newer cars.

I would have a DB11 in a heartbeat. Had a good look around one at Nottingham AML, last week and the interior is just lovely. I thought my 2013 Vantage looked shabby when I got back in it. I bet they drive beautifully as well.

As for the DBX, I would sell some of my body parts for one, but I need them at the moment! What a car and the amount of car you get for the money is crazy.

Alas, both are certainly out of my price range, but I am satisfied with my 2013 Vantage. Just being an Aston Martin owner for me is delightful, but owning one of these would be sublime.

Although I had owned a solitary Aston a DB9 , I had always been a confirmed Jaguar Owner . I was looking to swap the F Type V8 R for the latest Vantage but struggled with the frontal aspect which to me looked hideous . After another F Type an SVR and a brief flirtation with a 911 GTS I found myself back at an Aston Dealership and a Melted Silver Vantage with the updated Grill , in my humble opinion it completely transformed the Car .I considered the DB11 , but for me from certain viewpoints its a very ungainly design , especially the rear haunches and the headlights .A minor quibble with the Vantage and thats the Infotainment , overcomplicated its not a patch on Jaguars System . My next Aston will be a Timeless DBS . I was looking at a new one in Grange Edinburgh on sale for £300,000 whilst on Autotrader you will pick up a good one for £150,000 . Thats a lot of depreciation and I will be happy for someone else to take the " hit ". The Vantage V8 Coupe is in my view a great Aston , I dont think I could go back to that " weekend only " aspect of earlier Cars

I’ll never sell my V12VSR which I have owned for 7 years. I also recently purchased a DBX707, what a great car which is a perfect complement to the Vantage.
Out of the current range, I do like the DBS but it’s a big car and I like my sports cars to be compact with a big engine. I didn’t like the New Vantage when they were launched but they are definitely growing on me, I saw a green F1 Edition at my dealer last week which looked very tasty but I wouldn’t sell my V12VSR for one.
If adding a third Aston, I’d probably go classic.

I find the responses fascinating. It is interesting how many have a VH, and even if already have a 21st century car, then say they would go classic for a 3rd.

It is interesting how many have a VH ...

The enthusiasm for VH cars is probably shown quite well by one of my topics.
10 pages of owners, who have (or had) several Aston Martins.

If you have not already seen the topic Calinours, you might be interested to read it.
In fact you may appear on the topic. If not, please add your entry, including that lovely photo of your AM collection.

I’m currently looking for a 4th Aston to add to my little fleet. It will be either a Vanq/S or maybe a Rapide S. It won’t be anything currently being produced. There’s nothing to like about the current lineup, with the possible exception of the DBX, but that’s not a car, so doesn’t figure into my purchase plans. You don’t often see a manufacturer screw up an entire product line in one fell swoop like Aston has done. A single model, yes, but every model?!?!

So my aston history is a 2007 V8V manual, (sold) , a 2017 V12VS, and now a 2022 V8 F1 Vantage

there is more to these cars than looks alone

I still drive both the V12 & the F1 regularly and they are completely different cars to drive, both with their own character & attributes & shortcomings.

The difference between the VH series and then current AM6 was brought home to me in stark contrast of a recent weekend away with some mates. One of them has a 2014 V8 Vantage S manual. We swapped the F1 for the V8VS on some fabulous country roads, so I was out of the F1 and into the V8VS.

The F1 is enormously capable, with so much grip & poise and so much torque from the turbo V8 that it just accelerates out of corners effortlessly & can carry so much speed into them and still manage mid corner bumps in the road without fuss. It is incredibly confidence inspiring, but, it is so quiet, and so smooth that the sensation of driving it fast and the engagement is less than the VH cars. (The noise I will get fixed by either deleting the GPF or deleting the rear muffler). I think this will increase the sense of engagement a lot

The V8VS manual is a whole different animal, fast, needs revs up in corners, bumps around a lot (compared to the F1) still capable and manages undulations well but not as sophisticated or quick as the F1. where it does win out is the engagement - you really get a sense of how fast you are going and where the limits are (both your own & the car's). The same applies to my V12VS which is a step up from the V8 notwithstanding the better balance of the V8

as far as looks go - the VH cars as an overall package are sublime - even 15 years on. The F1 with the extended lower lip and egg crate grill are an acceptable finish for the front (but could still be improved a7 made more elegant), the rear and rear 3/4 of the F1 are just awesome and have such road presence

Internally the VH is better designed, crafted & a higher quality environment to be in. The controls are simple and I like that. The F1 is a bit complicated, I'm not really a fan of the dash readouts or some of the menus to get to things, but the seats are way better than the VH sporst seats.

Both are great cars, the VH series willalways be special but I think there is a place for both, representative of different eras and different tatses

If/when I could afford a newer Aston it would be one of these I would think (saying that based on looks, not having driven one yet)
