OH MY GOD......I was speccing my V8 at Gaydon on Friday and had a tour of the fantastic production facility, I was drooling over the DB9's and AMV8's and then I noticed it.....the blot on the beautiful landscape that is the Vantage...There has been no pictures of it or any talk of it before.....the STUPID, Nova style, halfords, 'bee sting' Aerial on the back of the roof... To say I went mad was an understatement...

Sir "the under boot lid Aerial did not work, so we could not be bothered asking the Ford boys how the in-windscreen Mondeo Aerial works, so we drilled a hole in the back of the roof and nipped to the local Halfords and got this one, why do you think it looks horrible".

I am just hoping that this is just a pre-production 'fix' and a discreet Aerial will be designed in before I get my car (December/January).

Has anyone else noticed this or have an opinion?

Cheers

ps still is an amaisin car.....sounds like a cross between a Nascar and a 360.....yum yum yum..

pps was chatting to the Aston Chief instructor at GFOS yesterday and he says the ride is fantastic (one of my early concerns)

ppps Almond Green with dark grey leather....proper racing Aston Style

I have to confess that it didnt bother me hugely. I agree that it is not perfect, but I will not let something like that ruin my enjoyment of the car.

Yes the car looked and sounded absolutely stunning at Goodwood.

It's interesting also that you rarely see publicity shots of the car with a front licence plate. When you do, it's set too high and encroaches on the classic grille shape.

As for the aerial, another reason why my order is looking iffy. Why can't they use a windscreen aerial like other manufacturers?

I can just imagine it, an issues list as long as your arm as the date when real cars have to be delivered to real customers and quick and dirty solutions become the order of the day...

I would have thought a shark fin aerial ala M3 would have ben the way forward!

If the antenna is anything like the one recently added to the Vanquish S, I think it is horrendous and may well be a deal breaker for me. So much effort was put into designing one of the most beautiful cars in the world, only to have someone drill a hole in the roof and stick an 8 inch antenna through it. There is obviously a better solution and Aston should do it right for the price they are charging.

If you are really that bothered I'm sure it would be easy to source a BMW shark fin aerial or have something bespoke made up that would be suited to your taste....

Dear friscorays, it is exactly the same and looks as stupid. I see TVR have done a similar 'fix' with the T350 Models but then there are 1/2 the price of a V8 and 1/4 of a Wanquish. I awlays thought the 'shark fin' was a GPS antenna, the GPS antenna on a AMV8 is under the rear boot lid...(if you spec sat nav). I am just hoping by the time they build mine they have sorted the issue...properly!

If Aston have had to start using a roof mounted ariel, as opposed to the boot one, then has anybody stopped to think that the only influence that would make them change this is the current Aston owners moaning about the boot one ??

Damned if you do, damned if you don't pops into mind

I am not aware of any modern car anywhere near the Aston price point which utilizes such an unsightly approach to radio reception. At the suggestion of another forum member, I have emailed Aston customer service informing them of my opinion.

I have had a letter of intent (with deposit)in for a V8 Vanatge for over a year here in the States. I will hold judgment until I see one in person in September. Ultimately, I may put my money where my mouth is and withdraw my deposit (which will be a very painful thing for me to do as I am otherwise in love with the car).

How about a dose of reality for you....

IT'S ONLY AN ARIEL.....!!!!!

Although, I am sure they will have a list as long as your arm of people who would love to take your place.

Some people are just so ungrateful !!

Out of interest, make sure you post their reply

st170j,

Have you seen the antenna in question? If not, you should check out thread with pictures at the AMOC.org site. There has not been one positive comment about it by owners or potential future owners. In fact, most are horrified by it and feel it is completely out of place on an Aston.

I don't expect a reply from Aston but as someone who up until now was one of their customer base, I am entitled to give them my opinion.

I don't know why you get the impression that I am ungrateful. I work hard for my money and don't spend it lightly. Should I get down on my knees and thank Aston for defacing a car that I was about to spend over $100K on and have dreamed of for over a year. One could make the best tasting cake in the world but if it were iced with dog s**t, I for one would not eat it.

Hyundai run the antenna through a very small heated-rear-window style circuit.
It works, too.

They charge peanuts.

Aluminium cars provide very good shielding from electrical interference (and radio signals) maybe AM couldn't get a concealed aerial to work properly.

You could of course attach the aerial leads to the steel sections of the car and see what happens

Yes, it may be only an aerial but in a world of the ultimate discretionary purchase, such as this car, it's easy for such things to grate and for me to say, sod it, I'm going elsewhere.

It's not just the aerial. The pricing of all the options at £xx95 also strikes me as cynical marketing, not to mention the compulsory options of leather and 19" wheels because the lower cost options don't past muster. And then there's the story of the auto box not fitting in the car, the lack of provision for the front number plate, the dubious screening of what's under the tailgate, the delayed production and so it goes on.

And still I keep the faith, waiting to see what this car is like where it matters most, to drive. I have, as insurance, put my name down for a 997 turbo which may be as common as muck but which I know will not have these SNAFUs. I don't have the garage space for both so at some point, I'm going to have to make a decision one way of the other.

I only say ungrateful as you should appreciate the position you are in. You have an AMV8 on order man, who cares about a little bit of plastic sticking out the back !!
