I don't think AM would see the Caymen as a competitor just because of performance similarities.

In the same way that the similarly performing BMW M6 got trounced by the (twice as expensive) F 612 Scaglietti.....it is a non-issue for me.

I know how good Porsche's are and how useable, but for me, that, and their familiarity and 'commomness' is their downfall. I have always wanted an AM and this will be my first,...... so no contest at present.

I can`t imagine either AM or Porsche see the Cayman as a competitor, certainly in terms of price let alone anything else! AM V8 or Carrera S or even (perhaps) AMV8 or GT3?

Anyway, much as I enjoy Porkers it would have to be the AMV8!

Yeah, doesnt seem much of a comparison to me. Maybe 997TT vs AMV8 would have been a better comparison (and that which AM is aiming at).

80K?!! Is that really the cost before extras? Sheesh. Doesn't sound like the affordable AM predicted. Are they ensuring the car stays exclusive? I wonder if anyone has done an investigation: after the cost of an engine for a luxury sports car (say) 15k, what is left in the car's build that justifies the rest of the cost? Anyone know the replacement cost of the AM's V8? Deduct that sum from the 80k and ask yourself the same question ...

Basic price £79,995 and a properly specced car is going to be £88-89K!! Retail price never has any bearing to cost of parts and labour. When you buy an AM you buy into a dream. I was hoping that the car would be around £65K but I will still be ordering mine at the new price as it's a dream for me to come true!!

Go to the factory and look at the investment in getting it 'right'. This is an efficiently built but extensively hand finished car. This will be built at 3-4000 cars a year, Cayman will be 10,000 and 997 is 30-40,000 a year.

There is no doubt that it is expensive, but on that basis so is a DB9 a Continental GT, a 360 and a 430 etc, etc. Porsche have always been the bargains for what they offer.....but that is not exclusivity.

LA you are right, but there is quite a bit of space still. More than enough for my weekly shop.

La,
you are talking of the original indian built prototype/concept car I think.

I wanted mine to look as close to it as possible.
No option to put leather in the tail yet and only full leather interiors at the moment so none of the technical cloth insert on the seats yet :-(

Still the finished pre prod cars look stunning.
The factory is simply incredible.

The place really is that clean, its so so impressive and you can see the money that has been poured in to modernise the manufacturing and maintain high quality.

Not sure if I am in the same stratospehere as you guys, but I have a dilemma. Or hoe I will have....

To test over weekend:

Toyota Soarer 1992 £4k - buttons enough for Herself and V8 for me. Price right for both.

Cerby 1997 4.2 £15K - the missus may be tempted by either to contribute a substantial sum towards this beast

A8 4.2 £7.5K

Audi 1991 3.6 V8 (yep) £1K - rare opportunity

Chim 1993 4.3 £10K - She may be tempted.
Chim 1995 4.0 £11K - ditto

Ahem.... AMV8 (carb, manual, 23k miles, 1975, restored) £17K. What are the potential smiles we can expect & pitfalls to fear, in the event that we are both smitten?

Next week, if still undecided, I will buy a restored Rover Sd1 3.5 VDP, 91k miles, 1986, for £750 that I have not yet seen but can use till I drop, while I pay existing commitments and get over the latest craving for a Beast of Eight

What say ye?

Toyota Soarer never sold in the Uk- only imported. Very much buyer beware with that one. But then again...
cerby a great car, but ask on the TVR section for owners stories. Ditto other TVR's.

The Audi is a saloon car. A rapid one, but a saloon cra nonetheless. It will feel and rive like one. Aston V8. Well...

I'm looking at buying one of the first- a DBS V8. Despite me having a good look underneath, I have just spent £400 having a proper inspection by a specialist. Its amazing what I missed, but they did confirm that the chassis has no rust and (I already knew) the engine has just been rebuilt- 400 miles ago. Still being run-in. These are the two major cost points for any V8. It was the best £400 I have ever spent.

Oh, the owners club has a forum, wiht lots of people asking the same questions, and info on where to get yours looked at. Also drive one: they are veyr different ffrom other cars to drive. Not worse- I love the feel of them, but they are different. A lot of people have bought them, driven them and then deicded they didnt like them. Or the fuel costs, for that matter...!

Hope this helps

Thanks for that, Will.

Scores out of 10, for condition; drive; sound; for those cars we have tried over this weekend:

Cerby - 6 ; 7; 7

Audi A8 - never even drove it; it had loads of water under the mats just like the one we had last year so we got off. Total pain in the arris

Chim - 6 ; 7; 9

Audi A4 2.8 Q ( surprise addition, seen in car lot)
8; 8; 4

Maserati 3200GT another surprise addition, in dealers for £20k, where we went to see another chim ( which was a total filthy shed, and for £15k cos it had fsh) Well this Maser was wicked. Looks ace but condition poor 5; drive was awesome 9 and sound 10 .
Never knew it had twin turbos till the dealer said that was why the missus nearly flew out the back window when I overtook a bus

Soarer - despite phone call before hand, the lads hadnt got it raod worthy as the dash was still out from wednesday. Turned over lovely and that exhoaust sounded breathy but spoke of a potent heart. Cant wait for a drive during the week.

Today, it was Aston. Condition 9+ for the year ( 1975 ); drive - not. Guy has offered seller full £19995 asking over the phone so just got to look over and hear it - sound: 9 If he pulls out though, he has my number. Shame.

Then to the Griff - an addition this morning, as it was only a few milesaway from Aston. Stunning condition, engine maintained by engineer owner last two years; 9. Drive - only as passenger but better then my old wedge at 9 also. Sound at tickover not as per wedge or chim, but when accelerating, it had to get a 10+. Just superb. Asking Pounds18K for a 34thou three owner car. Hmmm...

Later today, it is the V83.6 audi, then tuesday, another aston so I hope to try that one myself.

Then it is decision time.

Looks like Griff at the mo. Or a better kept Maser. OR the Aston. One of them.

And my counsellor will struggle to remain non judgemental at my next session!
