I hope somebody here can help, thanks in advance for any suggestions.
I reversed my 2005 DB9 from my garage onto my drive, it started fine, I moved some of the other cars about and went to start it again 2 minutes later and it wouldn't start, the start button would NOT illuminate red and I had a red flashing light in the dash. I pressed the yellow battery reset button and that didn't work.
I looked in the boot and one thing that was strange was that the battery cut off switch was illuminated white but the top of the button wasn't illuminated red(like on the auto buttons). No idea if this is connected.

Thanks in advance

I just tried again and it started, I turned it off and tried immediately and it wouldn't start again. I get lots of error messages on the dash now, emission fault etc. Is this likely the car battery? I am sure I have read that you get all these messages when the battery is low or damaged.

The battery has to be the first port of call, give it a good charge overnight and see how it is tomorrow.

Chances are it will all be back to normal after a charge.

Definitely a low voltage issue with the battery. A charge may improve it but possibly battery is past it's best and needs replacement or else this might happen again.

+1 for the battery being the first port of call. If the car has been sat for any length of time, even just a few days, then there may not be enough life in it to start the car more than once in quick succession. Give it a full charge at least over night and try again. I always keep mine on a battery conditioner. You just need to remember to disconnect it before driving out of the garage, learn from my mistakes. rolleyes

Also, if the flashing red light is top left in the instrument binnacle, that's your tracker/immobiliser so I believe you may not get it to fire up if it's activated.

HI,

Thanks in advance.

I have exactly the same problem as Simon. The DB9 starts first time every time without any problems, no message and no codes. However, if i switch the car off and then try and restart it within three minutes, the car will not start. In that three minute period, the start button will NOT illuminate red and the immobiliser has a red flashing light on the left of the dash.

After the three minutes, when i turn the key the start button illuminates and the car can be started. The dashboard will show the "emission service" message but once it has been erased it never comes up again unless i repeat the restart.

Lookin at the codes, it mentions PATS and PCM issue, but once cleared, again the codes only come back if I perform the restart.

I have tried both keys and still get the same problem.

The battery is still under guarantee and i keep it trickled charged when the car is not in use.

Any advice will be gratefully received.

Mike

I put a new battery on mine, then needed to use an obd scanner to reset the lights and it all worked fine. I never had the problem again.

Check the voltage of the battery and then again as the engine is cranking, see if it's dropping a cell. Is the alternator charging the battery? You can check by using a voltmeter across the battery as the engine is running.

I was told that the AM charger that came with my car was really just a battery conditioner rather than be able to charge a low battery and that may have caused my problem.

As somebody else said it may be the immobiliser/tracker.

It seems to be a very common fault when I read up on mine and was nearly always the battery.

Thanks Simon.

I will try a new battery but i find it very strange though. I have had the car for 18 months and it has always started first time and never failed, so unsure why the battery only fails on the restart, even after it has had a long run. Also, why after 2 minutes does it always restarts fine.

I was thinking it was more an immobiliser issue as the issue lasts for a period of time (2 minutes) then fine again.

However, you problem description is exactly the same as mine and i cannot find anyone else with exactly this problem.

May i ask, as you mentioned that this is a very common problem, where you found reviews of this as i have searched and as i said earlier, your item was the only one i could find that matched exactly my problem.

Just for further analysis

The battery was changed in sept 2016. It is an Exide premium battery(still under Guarantee) but the car has only travelled 1000 mile in those 4 years, which means that it has been on trickle feed quite a lot.

The charge i am using is an Aston Martin IR12-374631-AA

I say its common as there are pages of results on Bing and Google on why a db9 doesn't start, some on here from other posters, nearly all were battery related. I am sure there are other causes like immobiliser or ECU.

I just had a quick read up and a few easy things to check are
1) lock and unlock the car again, then try again
2) brake pedal switch - behind the brake pedal is a switch, when the car won't start push it in by hand and see if the button turns red
3) when it won't start push the yellow battery reset button below the rear seat on drivers side(you can see it through a hole in the metal when you remove the seat cushion(cushion is held by velcro)
4) feel behind the dash and push electrical connectors to see if anything is loose.

These all cured a non start issue for other db9 owners.

One other thing I read was that a tracker can cause issues if it's old and hasn't been serviced/had it's battery replaced. Does yours have a tracker?

It looks like it's your tracker unit - here is a YouTube video on it. The good news is it's about £50 to fix the problem - they say nearly all electrical problems are caused by the tracker.

Hi Simon,

You are a star,. The u tube video makes perfect sense. There was a tracker subscription on the car but the subscription was stopped a while ago, and i believe, like you, this definitely sounds like my problem.

I will get it checked and respond back to the forum.

Thank you
