I've Decided to check my torque settings after having some work done, as when I questioned the mechanic about torque settings on my car he replied ' we tighten them straight up to 150nm'.

When I checked the manual it says first to 80nm and then 180nm.
180 nm seems really high. I've never tightened wheel nuts this tight before... Is there any danger of striping threads?
I've had a go, but all I have is a halfords pro torque wrench, and it seems like I'm having to press really hard.... Basically I bottled it and stopped...
So cutting through the waffle... Is it really 180nm? Is this an unusually high setting? (I'm sure my old 928 was 130nm)...

Just looking for some reassurance biggrin

Cheers,

Richard.

Managed to find another thread via goggle. None of my nuts are at the correct setting... Just hope my wrench is accurate.

Hi Richard. Google is your friend, but if I am honest I would go with the manual. You should never just tighten to the max torque and should start off in a pattern to a low torque first. So tighten 1 and then do the one almost opposite and work around the wheel that way. What did google say as the workshop manual for the V12V says 175nm.

It was a thread on here. Mikey_k and George, bingobob had contributed too. Can't find it now.....

It said the same as my manual, torque to 80nm and then to 180nm. Work around the wheel tightening every other nut in a single movement.
I was just worried that 180nm seems much higher than anything I'd used before.

Now I've managed to scare myself in to doubting the accuracy of my wrench as , despite light use, it has never been calibrated since I bought it and it must be 7-8 years old.
Also I left it set at around 150nm which apparently you're not supposed to do as it again can cause calibration to go off. The suggestion being that it stretches the internal spring. Which if true will mean that if anything I'm more likely to under torque it than over.

I was also shocked to see 180Nm in the manual of my V8V. I am used to torquing to much lower values on my other cars. Still, if that's what the manual says...
