V8V num. plate plinth & a couple of Qs
Discussion
Can't seem to find a post on how to drop the number plate plinth on my V8V.
Could someone please point me in the right direction?
Couple of other issues:
Seems the steering wheel rattles when on a bumpy road.
Is there a fix for this? I don't want to tamper too much with it as this is obviously where the air bag is.
Notchy gearbox. Before I bought my car, I drove a friends. Hated the gear box as I found it difficult to get in gear especially 1st and 2nd. I was assured by my Aston dealer it was probably because it didn't have the linkage fix. Granted mine is a lot better but it's still pretty poor when cold. Is it a case of they all do that? Guess I'm just a bit concerned (and why would I be...not really related) that my clutch will let go. Car has only done 16500 miles.
Apart from that, fab car. :-)
TIA
Gareth

I can't comment on the gearbox linkage or steering column, but the number plate plynth comes off very easy.
Take the plate off the front. Then 4 allen screws are exposed. Undo and the plynth will come away.
The number plate will fit on the bottom holes left by the removed plastic.
Once you start it's all very obvious.

Gearbox sounds about right, if clutch hasn't been done yet they seem to go between anything from 6000 to 50000 miles but typically around 30000.
My first one went at 27k my current one went 7000 then at 25000.
Best tip I read for prolonging it's life was don't put any gas on when reversing, allow clutch to fully come up and it will slowly reverse. Reversing was only time I ever got clutch whiff

Hi Gareth, good timing - I just did mine yesterday and I used this guide kindly put together by amv8jd. Works a treat.

Steering wheel rattle is probably the airbag pack atached to the steering wheel coming slightly loose. Rick at DMS fixed mine in a few minutes. Alarming noise though. Sounds structural but the airbag pack is heavy.
Getting your dealer to add a slipping agent to the gearbox oil will make a big difference to the notchiness of the cold box.
Again Rick did this for me and it definitely helped.
Also making sure the cable linkages from the gearstick to the box are properly adjusted. Finally, there is a more radical fix at many hundreds of pounds that your dealer referred to.

I know many remove the front plinth, but it is also designed to help prevent damage from a low speed impact, personally I would leave it as is, but I'm sure I'll be outvoted on that one
Aston introduce a new type of gearbox oil, may be worth checking if your car has this, if not this will help. In honesty even with the new oil and adjustment the gearbox will still be notchy at best, but there is no doubt the change can be improved with these tweaks.

I've waited to remove mine, until I'm clear in my head that I know how long the nose is. Well worth keeping on for a few weeks until you're comfortable with the nose. There is an amusingly overengineered feel to the mountings.Gassing Station | Aston Martin | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
