Weird iPod Cable

This small issue has been bothering me since I got my V8 Vantage.

It has a black iPod cable coming out of the arm rest cup holder compartments but it does not appear to do anything but charge the iPod/iPhone. However if I turn on the iPod on the iPhone no music comes out of the iPhone speaker as you'd expect if the phone was on charging normally. It looks as if the output is being directed elsewhere.

I know that there are after market kits availbale that use a switch to change the source from CD changer to the iPod, does anyone where this switch could possibly be? I took it to a car audio place and they were confused as they could not find it (or was notwhere they expected it to be), and thought that the owner who had it fitted might of only had it fitted it for charging which they found odd.

Anyone have any experience with this type of thing. Advice would be very welcome.

Kind Regards

Not sure if this is what you're looking for, but I think you need to use the button called Mode, which switches source between CD, iPod and USB. If I remember correctly it's on the left of the CD loading slot. It's somewhere in that bank of buttons anyway!

I did try the Mode button but with no luck. The car is 2006 (January I believe).

you may have a denison gateway installed on your car, look for a glowing blue light in one of the footwells (possibly tucked behind a peice of trim - read up you will get what I mean) on the box of the denison that has athe blue led there is also a switch, one way the cd player works as normal and the other setting is to switch to iDevice use.

Look at the last owner on the V5 and try to contact him?

Please take a picture of the centre Ipod lead and I will try and identify what it may be and how to make it play.

Hi James

That would be helpful if you dont mind having a quick look.

Here is a picture of the actual cable.

On closer inspection when listing rear shelf behind the seats it appears to be going towards the back of the car and up - so it might well be just a charger of some sort.

Here is another photo of the cable going across the battery and up towards the boot.

Any advice would be great.

I agree with the previous post that suggests you check the footwell for a blue LED light. There is a switch that may be turned off to enable the CD deck. My Dension unit (self installed) uses this system.

It is a plug from a dension unit. However it is the FM modulator version. The cable is going back to the nearside rear of the car where the radio tuner is situated. The unit plugs into the antenna and converts the stereo audio into an FM frequency, normally around 88.7Mhz.

Before I helped develop with Gateway 500 unit for Aston with Dension, this was the only way of doing things.

James, thank you for the info.

I have been out and tried it. I tuned the stereo into 88.7 (infact I went through the whole Mhz (FM) range) with the iPhone plugged in but it still does not do anything.

I am going to try it later on with my iPod but doubt this would make any difference. Fingers crossed otherwise I think I might get something installed by the dealer or try one the Dension kits.

Glad to be of service. Let me know if you need anything else.

The Gateway 500 works through the fibre optic system so gives far better quality than the FM Modulator route. However the menu and operation system can be a bit clunky when operating through the radio controls. You can still use it in UI mode though. Aston do their own Ipod kit as a retro fit (£1100 ish), which is about twice the price of the Dension unit I fit.

Hello James

Ok I got it to work when I tried plugging in a iPod, so it was the FM Transmitter thing you described in your earlier post.

Guess that it does not to work with an iPhone 4s then. Not that I am that bothered by that just nice to know it actually did something other than charge my iPhone and iPod.

Thank you for your advice on this really appreciate that.

Kind Regards
