Hi

My 2008 V8V is in for service with Stratstone, and I'm told I need a new clutch after 16,000 miles - cost £3,800!!

Does anyone have experience of this?
Can you recommend a good garage for Aston service in West London?

Thanks
James

West London it's always Nick Mee http://www.nicholasmee.co.uk/ top notch outfit.

However, you could call Bamford Rose and enquire about their uprated clutch. I think it comes in at less than that and will last a lot longer and drive better. I know they have it for a manual, I assume they have one for the ASM cars... http://bamfordrose.com/

sounds about £1000 or more expensive than you can get it done at an independant (as recommended above)

and 16K miles is bugger all ...I wonder what kind of life its had frown

...im on 60K+ miles on original clutch, so its certainly not "normal" for it to last 16K miles, although not the worst ive read on here

some people had theirs go sub 10K, and did manage some warranty claim, but it really depends on how you can prove the car has been driven

OP's car is ASM, not manual. If a lot of stop-start traffic, hill-starts, reversing up inclines and so on, it'll get eaten up pretty quickly.

I do think your 60k miles is unusually good though Bogie. I'm about to have mine done at 27k. Can't risk the Monaco jaunt with it, no slip yet but bite point is very close to the top of the pedal travel frown

There's the killer! frown
ASM1 has creep mode which will munch the clutch if not used properly and regular clutch learns are a MUST
Talk to Mike at Bamford Rose for a cheaper more durable alternative.

Hmmm that does not sound good, but as others say on here, regular clutch learn is crucial. My old V8V ASM1 clutch was replaced under warranty with 28K on (spring failure) and I was told that there was plenty of life left in the clutch. Now I would say that I did not drive in traffic much, but it was driven with very frequent full throttle changes.

If you have any understanding of how a clutch works, you can see it's down to the driver as much as the mechanical part. Bogie's has lasted 60k miles wink You could trash a manual clutch in 2k miles if you didn't care.

It's a sigle plate type which isn't as strong as the (obviously superior) DB9's twin plate clutch, but still, if used right they will last just the same as any other high performance car (911, Maser) and better than many - yes Lambo, that's you! I would usually budget a clutch on a heavy GT car for every 25-30k miles with my style of driving.

Bogie, if i didn't know you better and your reputation did not preceed you, I'd say you were a big girl's blouse wink

LOL

my car did 25K miles a year on business at the start...easy motorway life I guess smile

Interspersed with a couple of trackdays, an airfield training day with 1/4 mile runs, and regularly gets a good run to the redline from a standstill through the first few gears

anyway, better not tempt fate, I can do without a few grand bill

I know one thing, Im not ever having one of those auto crapit gearbox things if they munch through clutches like that...I will stick to changing gears myself smile

I see you have a Gallardo - e-gear or manual? How have you found the clutch life on it? Very small contact area due to packaging demands apparently...

Its manual,30000 miles its on its second clutch ,current one has lots left in it,I know of one bloke with 40k miles on his first clutch..but that is unusual.
I agree with you about the user element,I misread the Op as well as you can see from my first response,if I had seen it was flappy paddle one I would not have been suprised.

If that car has done most of that miles in London , stop start traffic with the way a sportshift clutch works i am affraid this is going to happen .
London cars really need clutchs learns done every few days.

Take it to Amersham they will save you well over £1,500 on that price.

Definitely go to Amersham, service is great and highly recommended and as above they will be able to do a fantastic price for you. I'm on a verging on 16k miles now in my 09 Sportshift and it's constantly a worry how long it will last. Have you specifically noticed any signs of anything other than just being told it's on the way out?

Hey Shmee....

Seeing that you have a great relationship with your service agent, why don't you pop along to him so he can hook up his diag kit, read the clutch wear indicator position and predict with accuracy the % wear rate of your clutch??????
