Hi all,

As some of you know I got my new 2005 DB9 a few weeks ago and am loving it. So much so that I've invested in a private plate (standard 'V12' prefix jobby). I received the documentation for it today and was preparing what is necessary to assign the plate when I realised I don't have an MOT certificate - not a problem I thought, I'll just get a replacement certificate printed for £10 at a nearby MOT station...

Then I checked the MOT checker on the VOSA (direct.gov.uk) website and typed in my V5C and current plate. It came back with EXPIRED. It was last MOT'd on 21/11/2008 (which expired a year later) with an odo reading of 10k miles (it's now on 24k).

Is this likely to be correct? I thought you couldn't tax the vehicle without a valid MOT certificate - the dealer added a full year of a tax on my behalf before I had the car delivered 3 weeks ago but perhaps they did this under a 'dealer' tax issuance or something which has different requirements?

I fully intend on going back to the dealer tomorrow and enquiring about it but in the meantime, I was hoping you guys might shed some light on the matter.

Does seem strange and certainly one to take up with the dealer.

Can't comment on the accuracy other than to say any inaccuracy would be unusual. The terms and conditions do make an allowance for a mistake though:

If its just been tested by the dealer then it may not be on the database yet. I'm saying that to help you sleep wink

At the end of the day it will be sorted for you one way or another.

Maybe it had a different private plate from 2009 - 2012?
If the previous keeper transferred his private plate to his new car, the car would then revert to its original registration, which is the one you are checking.

The dealer should be able to advise you regarding your vehicles current MOT certificate.

it may have done the miles between 2008-2009 and then been in storage under a SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification)in which case it wouldn't neen an MOT.....but it dosn't explain why the dealer didnt put one on

Difficult to see how the dealer managed to tax it before you bought it and I would doubt they are legally entitled to sell a car that is outside MOT regulations without advising you that that is the case. Will be interested to hear what they say to you. Good luck.

Sounds like an admin problem - I can't see how anyone, anywhere could get tax without an MOT. smile

Hi all,

Thanks for the replies. The car is already due to goto the dealer tomorrow to fix a few niggles I've noticed since buying the car. I've called today and the salesman that dealt with my car is off today but I did get through to the servicing dept and they said "Leave it with us" when I explained the situation. I've also said, in the very unlikely event that my car doesn't have an MOT, that I would like them to perform one whilst they have it in their hands this weekend.

The only thing about my tax, which I didn't ask about (perhaps I should have) is that it expires on Dec 31st this year - it was purchased on 26th January so it's a little over 11 months tax (for the price of 12) - is this normal?

Cheers,

James

Pretty sure your RFL is correct James...they round it back to the end of the previous month.

If you think that's unfair, wait until you see what they do to you if your retirement day for SP falls on a Tuesday frown

biggrin Some way until I draw on my SP - I'm fully expecting it to be worthless when my time comes, Tuesday or not.

Ok so the car has been at Stratstone Western Ave London since Friday morning, they've fixed a few niggles under warranty (I hope!) and found a scan of the MOT certificate (which they have emailed to me).

The salesman said he is sure he gave me the MOT certificate (News to me - I have never seen it) and said the car was on a private plate before this. However, the MOT certificate copy I have states the current plate (XX05 XXX) so why it didn't appear on the VOSA online checker I have no idea?

Anyway, I've yet to hear back from Stratstone about my car and when it will be returned but I have been assured that they will get a copy produced for me so I can assign my private plate...biggrin
