Presumably it's anything that's legal?

I thought there was a prescribed lower limit (above the legal minimum) below which they would change the tyres... maybe I was dreaming biggrin

Are you looking at a particular car?

Yes... just wanted to get my facts straight before I spoke to the dealer about it.... I'm sure I heard from someone that it was 5mm, actually I think it might have been from another dealer.. Anyway I can't seem to find much in the way of details on tinternet other than the car undergoes 140 point inspection...

As Shmee says it might just be that they need to be above legal min...

Not that it matters to some but beware low mileage older cars where they have plenty of tread but are well past their sell by date should you wish to give them some serious abuse biggrin

Also check the age of the tyres, especially on a low mileage car. I would fit a new set if they are over four years old.

You can tell the age by looking at the side of the tyre, somewhere there will be a code of numbers and letters that has been moulded into the rubber. it always starts with 'DOT' and looks like this: 'DOT WXYZ 1008' the last four digits are the week and year of manufacture, so the above tyres were made in week 10, 2008. so second week of march 2008.

Recommendation is not to have tyres that are over 6 years old, and tyre companies are not allowed to sell tyres that are over 3 years old.

hope this helps,
Oli.
