I have just updated my 2009 HDD Vantage nav to the 2011 Volvo MMM+ discs, however I have a question for those of you experienced with the newer systems that have speed camera notifications.

I'm lucky (or perhaps actually rather unlucky) in that there is one within 200 metres of my door so I am able to do lots of tests but as yet I'm unsure how to get it to beep at me without having a destination set? If the navigation is talking and giving me directions then it does that 'shutter' type noise which is brilliant but if it has no route set then it doesn't warn me at all, is that normal/can it be changed?

I did some playing and if you have voice directions off it also won't warn you which is very irritating because typically I have it guiding me but not talking.

Maybe even after all of this I still need to get a camera device of some sorts, at least I now have the nicer interface and updated maps.

Thanks,

Tim

Don't have nay speed camera in the neighbourhood here, but do you mean fixed cameras (that are shown as POIs) or dynamic ones shown via TMC (police checkpoint)?

Fixed cameras, that do display on the maps specifically as speed cameras, hence make the flash noise.

thx, I will test it out later then, both for the fixed cams as well as the dynamic checkpints (I assume this still works via TMC like in the DVD system? or only in NL/D and not in the UK?).

I use mine like you do, Shmee, and I've never found a way to do it either.

Tomtoms are the same. You have to have a route programmed or it won't warn you of anything or any other POI for that matter.

Not true, I currently use a TomTom purely as a speed camera warning device. I never set routes on it and it does beep away at me.

+1 Always leave mine on even with no route and still see POI's and get warnings

What tomtom are you using? My 750 Go live doesn't do this.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but I too am using a 750 and mine works exactly like this. For what it's worth I am confident my Father's 730 behaves in the same way as mine so maybe there is a setting somewhere that is disabled on yours?

Back on the topic though, it seems Volvo/AM have missed a significantly useful feature here. How irritating!

Did some more testing, but it is indeed not possible to have the Speed Camera sound on, while the nav voice is off. Only way would be if there is an "empty" voice that can be selected, then it would have the same effect, but a pity we can not upload "custom voice" in this system (yet).

Another real pity I think is that it only has the fixed cams included. The previous DVD system had a great way of showing dynamice police checkpoints, that are identified via TMC and dispplayed as POI on the map (many drivers overhere notice a police checkpint when they see them, and few minutes later it shows up via TMC for all other people!). I don't seem to get this great feature working in the HDD version..........

Real pity, since I now have to use my smartphone for this again (strange enough, this already worked many years ago in older Audi navs (RNS-E), then was gone in the newer MMI 2G, but is working again in the later MMI 3G!).

I did find the DVD based system not that bad. Graphics are poor, but in functionality it is better than many other (lane assist, finding POIs ALONG the route, ALONG the motorway, dynamic police checkpoints via TMC, zip code search, etc are not offered by many other factory systems from other brands...) and if you then have actual maps (here 100% coverage of zip codes and house nos) it is very useful.

It surprises me only that some functionality in the HDD system is missing.......

I did a long test drive this weekend: in Holland the fixed(!) speedcams are shown (with flash sound when voice guidance s on), but in Germany this feature is NOT working (probably fo legal reasons..............). Apparantly it is also working in the UK, so maybe good to make list for which countries it will work and which not.

I have the DVD based system in the UK - no camera warnings.

It sounds like it's only enabled with TMC, which isn't itself enabled in the UK. I vaguely recall some countries having this in Europe but most don't.
