Porsche owners in 'preferring Porsches' shocker smile

Ask the same question on here, 911s would be 'dull, common, arse-engined Nazi slot cars'.

They're both great, have owned both and am looking to own both at the same time in the next few weeks smile

Each to their own. My father has been a Porsche fan for years and states he doesn't like astons. That said, with ownership of all 9 cars, everytime he took delivery, 'best car in the world', within 6 months, he was bored and moaning and depreciation, issues, poor dealership customer service etc...

There are Aston lovers and Porsche lovers, I know where I'd rather be and feel no need to degrade the other!

There's at least one owner on here that has both!
Each to their own and all that.

I love Porsche having had two baby Boxsters not big boy Porsche's and had a track day driving a GT 3 but have no desire at all to own one.

Aston was and still is my dream and I am loving it.

I accept I may be in the minority, but track figures don't affect me. I just know what I enjoy driving every day.

Each to their own.

The 997 gen 2 with PDK is an amazing machine, but it's just so clinical. If I was shooting for a timed lap, I'd take a C2S PDK, but for all other scenarios the Aston is a much more diverse experience. If I could I'd have a 992.2 as a daily driver and a V8 as the weekend / out on the town car, then I would, but give me the choice of one and it's the Aston every time.

The thing that bothers me about that thread is, rather than saying they prefer the Porsche and why (which would be fair game), many of them thoroughly trash the Aston. It went beyond opinion and preference, and IMO actually did a disservice to the OP.

I just know that despite people thinking the Porsche is "a better car" than the Aston, if I owned pork now (I did a few years back and had nothing but problems with it, so I got rid and bought something I considered 'better'), I'd look out my window each morning and wish I had bought the Aston.

Being that I doubt I'll ever track a car again the real world performance figures don't interest me. Surely, if they did, I'd go and buy one of those new Datsuns. For me, the Aston looks and sounds better than the Porsche and has an overall better sense of occasion.

Have just read the thread....

Having owned a 911, in fact traded it in against the Aston... I think that the whole driving experience is on a completley different field..

I find the Aston a much better solid drive, feel more confident in fast cornering and at +150 MPH the front wheels actualy feel like they are still in contact with the tarmac unlike the 911....

I would never slate the porsches though, I do think that steping into an Aston from a porsche is step up!! And the other nice difference between porsche ownership and Aston ownership is the rare sightings, I saw 5, no lie 5 porsches at a set of traffic lights in West Kensington this week and 4 were the same colour.. Never seen that with Astons.

I also would buy another porsche in the future, maybe a turbo.... But for now I am still in love with the Aston..

Agree 100%. However, once you get really into a 911 and see what they can do, they are amazing. However, I'd have my Aston every time over any model of 911, I think the person who buys and keeps a Porsche is a differemt breed - it's about performance first an other things later.

So who buys the Nee-saan GTR? I suppose pure speed or ultimate performance freaks? A wonderful achievement but no interest for me. But why aren't all 911 owners buying them?

I'd rather have a 911 than an R8 though.

ooh not to sure about the last comment, had the pleasure of driving an r8 for about 3 months and was a fantastic experience, the car seemed to be too perfect handling was awesome the torque was great and the changing of gears wassuperb, i have never driven a porsche and you may have driven both so thats how you concluded, however i thinkk r8 looks better and was a wonderful drive a everyday drive and a very good sports car

Agreed Yeti, the 911 is phenomenal, and I respect it hugely. I would not want to own one though.

Why anyone would want to own a Nissan GTR is beyond me - yes they're fast, but that's it. No class, no presence, horrible interior, ste badge. Just awful cars imo, would never have one.

Not a fan of the R8 either, would have a 911 over one every time smile

I had a Nissan GTR right up my behind recently. Driving like a f'ing t*t. Then he overtook me in a suicidal manoeuvre on a blind bend in a speed-restricted area. I was rather hoping to see him a few miles further on wrapped around a tree. Alas no.

I've been reflecting on this over the last month or so as a 997GT3 was on my final short list when I eventually (rushed) into buying an N400. This is probably how I see it:

1. Grip. Both the same, broadly, can't realistically get either to lose grip at front or rear unless being a complete muppet or in the wet.
2. Dynamic balance. GT3 wins by miles, the ability to feel the change of direction and the slip angles is sublime. Only really comes alive close to the limit. Lower down the range the AM feels better planted, more subdued and less sensitive to throttle position
3. Performance. Nothing, real-world, in it. Both are fast, the GT3 is faster. A one-litre super bike makes both feel really, really slow.
4. Stopping. I've had issues with both, long/soft pedal. Can H/T in the Porky, cannot get it right in the AM.
5. Feel. Both make me feel good, the AM much more so. More people ask and are interested in the AM. I get let out of junctions and don't cringe when overtaking incase I get the Vs flicked.
6. Day to day. Mixed. AMs cold gearbox 1st/2nd plus slightly kangaroo clutch doesn't help. GT3 ride quality and general feeling of cheapness inside. My Range Rover beats them both hands down in that department.
7. Running costs. About the same. Porky slightly less niggly but AM pretty good on warranty items and more helpful (same dealership for both)
8. GT stuff. The wife loves travelling in the AM, so much we spent a weekend doing a 1,000 miles around Scotland. She hated the Porky. More packing space in the AM
9. Fuel & running. Eeeek, AM is terrible, really bloody awful compared with anything of similar power. Insurance on the AM is less than half of the GT3. Tyres are the same.
10. Theatre. AM wins hands down unless you're hammering on a track day (when you feel slow, lardy and rubbish compared to Caterfields, daft-engined Elises etc). Sounds is great across the rev range, GT3 is nice under heavy load and high rpm but nowhere near as good. Hand finished leather interior with hand stitching beats nice plastics and a 987-shared interior. Swan doors, nice.

I'm 9 months into ownership and actually plan to keep the AM for a while yet. I do miss my old Elise I had years ago to chuck around the back-roads but I cannot feel it's right to try and do that in either the AM or a Porky as the speeds are now just so bloody high.

My last four main cars purchased new have been a 997 C4S, a 997 GT3 (after testing a V8V 4.3), an N400 and finally the V12V.

I love(d) all four cars but I chose not to buy the V8V when moving out of the C4S as I was disappointed in the performance of the V8V at that time. I so wanted the AM and the AM dealer was alert to my desire. I was regularly kept in touch and the N400 tipped the scales. The handling of the N400 was really good and that little extra power made the difference. My dealer wasn't daft though and within twelve months the V12V was released and it was a no brainer.

That said, apart from the comparatively huge numbers of porsche's on the road, they are still desirable cars and I wouldn't knock anyone for choosing one. AM dealer is significantly better than Porsche in my experience but despite better quality feel and look to the interior of the AM the porsche is still the best built car on the road in my opinion. Nothing went wrong in two and a half years, 20000 mile ownership of the two cars and no servicing costs.

My personal preference is the AM, particularly the V12V, but Porsche have a great track record with the 911.

MrOrnafe and wantanewV12V have pretty much nailed it I think. I'd be interested from a Vantage S owner whose had a GT3 as well.
My S is poles apart from my 4.7 with the Sports Pack from the N400.

As an owner of an 88 X pack, DBS Volante, GT3 RS and a GTR I can tell you there are good reasons to own all of them but it really makes my blood boil when idiots that obviously don't have a REAL passion for cars dis the GTR

It is an awesome car but the more than occasional badge snob on this forum will never understand.

Aston is a looks leader as far as I'm concerned, has class (if your insecure enough to need it)but is like cheese to drive compared with a decent 911.

Surely neither an '88 X-Pack nor a DBS Volante (wonderful though they are) is the Aston to compare to a GT3. What made my blood boil in the thread on the Porsche forum (I am a Porsche fan and love my 993) was not that they said they preferred 911s (that would be expected) but that many of the posters -- many of whom have little or no experience of the V8V -- vigorously denigrated the Aston.

BTW, while I don't personally want to own a GTR, I have big respect for them.

I'm not sure anyone 'dis'd' the GTR (really... dis?). They just don't necessarily want one. I don't want one, nothing to do with the badge, just doesn't interest me though I appreciate it's very fast. Like the new Exige V6, it's going to be a fantastic car, but I don't want one.

And who are you to say who has REAL passion for cars, have you ever considered that some poeple like different things? So anyone with no interest in the GTR doesn't have passion for cars? We have no understanding apparently?

As your your Aston Vs 911 thing, you claim the Aston drives like 'cheese' compared to one. I assume you haven't driven cheese as it's a dairy product, but equally I know which I'd rather take round the 'Ring (GT3RS) and I know which I'd rather drive across Europe (Aston). The reason being I do drive across Europe whereas I don't drive round the Nurburgring. People drive in different ways and get pleasure in different ways. I tracked my DB9 last Saturday it was excellent. Would the GT3 or GTR been faster? Maybe not, as it's me driving and I go at my own pace, I'm not timing myself, just want to learn the limits of my car and enjoy myself.

Wind your neck in, leave out the insults. People like different things, but it seems you have a chip on your shoulder due to the Nissan badge rather than us.

FWIW I am currently shopping for a 911 C4 as a winter car. I have been an owner before (964) and agree they are tremendous cars. I like all cars, just some more than others...

In Liverpool GTR's are owned by drug dealers and husbands (who used to be a drug dealer) of Warrington based x pop stars with drug problems......they might be the finest drivers car in the world, but owning one "up north" is not a great idea........
