You can usually get to a feul station 2 miles away when the lines appear. (The new MY cars count down through single digits.) Don't drive too hard though...

I always note my mileage and fill up details so have a lovely 10,000 mile spreadsheet of it all. From my experience when you fill around the time of the turning point from 10 miles remaining to --- that means you'll be putting roughly 74-75 litres back in to it to brimful. So there are 5-6 litres left and although you'd never want to run it on empty in theory you should have another 20 to 25 miles beyond when it changes to the triple dashes before it's going to go kaput.

When you get to that level of fuel, it's the crap that you could be dragging through the filters that's more of a concern to me smile

Was going to agree with my tartan chum - what's the mythbust then James? Always used to get rust flakes stuck in carb needles on my old SAAB, usually as had no dosh to put fuel in!

Them wur the days Yeti - I've seen a few mushed fuel filters over the year.

Not because I couldn't afford the fuel, mind you, I was just too tight to buy it.

Now you have enough wealth to own your own refinery biggrin

Got to the petrol station ok put 75L in so when you have 3 dashes you should have 5L left in if you wish to run it that low.

At least i know what my range is now.biggrin

The feed to the fuel pump takes the petrol from the bottom of the tank so any crap that has entered the tank (which won't be much these days) then sucked up and caught in the filter is independent of the fuel level.

With your old SAAB, as you probably never filled the tank up condensation would have built up in the steel tank causing the inside to rust.

Plus modern fuel systems recirculate the fuel on a continous loop for better pressure control & temperatures
