What's it like when your clutch goes?

I ask this because I genuinely have no clue and I've been led to live in fear of the disaster that is a clutch going!
My car has a mere 12k on it so I'm hoping it's a while yet, but what do you actually experience? Is it that the car starts driving horribly for 10/100/1000 miles before? Does the car tell you itself that it's going to happen soon or do you just break down at the side of the road sometime?
In a Sportshift car, what makes it wear down faster? So long as you aren't doing 'launch control' starts and have never smelled burning clutch does that mean it's all ok? People always talk about "driving badly" as the cause, but what is it that actually wears it faster - I'm guessing 7krpm upshifts aren't good? Using the rev range from 2-5krpm and pushing on, is that bad for it? Does it make a difference if it's in comfort or sport? Is there a way you can do less damage to it with the Sportshift box or is it linear regardless?
Sorry for so many questions, but I've never understood this and with a service in a fortnight and worrying but the associated costs I figured it was about time to start learning!

Clutch judder when pulling away
When down shifting engine braking just sends revs flying
Giving it gas engine revs increase but speed doesnt increase at same rate
I had none of the above when my car all of a sudden struggled a bit goin 3rd to 4th when pressing on, few hours later, bang, no drive whatsoever

On number 2, can you say more what sending revs flying means? Like if you downshift while slowing down it goes up to crazy high revs when it really shouldn't?
Annoying how it went for you, is that common or seriously bad luck?
Sportshift with regular clutch learns won't wear any faster than a well driven manual (NO clutch slipping)
Unless you use the creep mode a lot
Best test is to put it in manual get to ~20 mph put it in a very high gear.
It may slip and rev out without going no where (dying clutch) or the antistall may cut in and shift down a few gears in which case its OK!

When my DB9 clutch went, it would rev normally for the first inch or so of accelerator travel after a change-up and then it would rev up very quickly as if the clutch was disengaged (which of course it was) before biting again.
The pre-cursor to this was arriving home twice to a smell of clutch detectable 100 yards away after a Stratstone delivery driver (since fired) had made a meal of parking on our steep hill. The first owner had not been easy on the clutch either. I had assumed the high-ish bite point was normal until it went. Then replacement clutch taught me otherwise.
As for smell though, it's impossible to avoid a small dose if reversing uphill around a corner.

Fortunately not and the responses on this thread have reassured me so as I do not seem to have any of the problems mentioned. I'm just gearing up for my car's 2nd service due on 23rd October that I'm yet to have booked in and thinking about the various costs that are going to come up in the next year or two, I do think I need to be getting my own oil ordered though!Are there any dealerships in particular open for a good deal at the moment? Grange Welwyn seem to be doing '10% Off'.
I have just had my V8V 2nd year service at Stratstones in Amersham and got an excellent deal from Alan; great service, did the windows adjustment to reduce the noise that I complained about previously and have ordered a new crank pulley to replace the rusting one.
Well worth a call and haggle - they used the oil that i provided as well.
