I know it sounds a bit sad but I clean my V8S before I drive then again when we return. Wheels always receive lots of attention. Having used any number of products I have now settled on Wonder Wheels. Cleaning the fronts is a bit of a bind because the discs are so big. The problem is the rears, the paint on the inner drum is coming off which quite quickly turns rusty. Has anyone else had the same problem? I am taking the car back to the dealer to question whether it is a warranty issue.
Cheers all
Rob

NO no no...Wonder wheels is corrosive!!!! Its an Acid. It will slowly destroy the lacquer and paint on your wheels. Chuck it out now.

Use something like Bilberry wheel cleaner.

wonder wheels is an acidic wheel cleaner, this will increase rust issues, the main thing I have found after customers using acidic wheel cleaners is the pins that hold the pads in can be extremely difficult to remove, the hub piece of the discs corrodes more quickly, as brake pads contain more metallic fragments there is an increase in brake squeal which can be nigh on impossible to stop, If using an acidic cleaner remove the wheels first so that other components are not affected, or use a non acidic cleaner, there are also various wheel coatings which significantly help with keeping he wheels clean,

Another vote for Bilberry - very effective at removing brake dust!

And another for Bilberry. Wonder wheels is a big no no if you want to lok after the wheels properly.

I protect mine using Rim Wax, which smells like a fruit paste but is easy to apply and gives a real shine to the wheels. For the problem of cleaning, I have a small detail brush to get into the wheel nut holes and the callipers and an EZ detailing Wheel brush which is ideal (http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/wheels-and-tyres/ez-detail-brush/prod_480.html)

Makes the job much easier and helps keep the wheels in great condition too.

DO NOT use wonder wheels!

I had the rear calipers replaced on my last vanatage because something like wonder wheels (which is acidic) corroded the chrome plate off the pistons frown

I've alway believed in prevention rather than cure.
I've always coated the insied nad out side of my alloys on all my cars with this

Being designed to protect high voltage insulators from the weather it is very very durable.

Please do not spoil you car by using wonder wheels!

Honestly I did some research and Wonder Wheels came out top as a wheel cleaner. As a consequence I bought 5 litres of the stuff plus 3 hand held containers. I did think that it smelt like the normal acid wheel cleaner.
Thankyou for the advice and suggestions. I was using Muc Off bicycle cleaner which was quite effective. I will try and source your proposed alternatives.
Meanwhile I have rusty drums.

Feeling very foolish now, Molly has just been out and bought the Sunday Mail plus an assortment of Cider so a whole load of emotions will be forthcoming.
I suppose that as I am or have been removing the paint from the hubs the wheels will have to be removed to repaint them. The car will have to go to a main dealer because of the tyre pressure monitoring system. Bugger Bugger!
I would say that the actual wheels look spot on it's what is festering behind on the rears that looks a bit not so good.
If my experience has helped anyone I'm pleased.
Must go something in the garage is calling.

It's been a hard lesson Rob.

But one that was well worth learning.

So just to repeat the point.

STOP BUYING THE SUNDAY MAIL smile

Ah Jockman, ever the pillar of wisdom. I don't normally let him have the Sunday Mail but he insisted. The deal was that he was not to read any of it to me. However, I could tell by the steam coming out of his ears how much he enjoyed it hehe What with that and the cider (what do you expect - we do live in Herefordshire!) needless to say the V8S stayed in the garage today, besides, the rain had put us off the trip to Chavenage House - did you go?

no wonder wheels, soap n water only

best you can do now, is to get the hubs painted with hammerite (like DMS do on a service) then clean the wheels and get some Gtechniq polymer onto them, 2 or 3 coats over a weeken

then never use anything acidic again ...the dust will just wipe off with soap n water for years

www.gtechniq.com

oh, if you are really anal about it, get the wheels refurbed in matt grey (anthracite) finish ...then they look the same, clean or dirty ....I dont clean mine for thousands of miles, no difference smile

Zymol wheel cleaner seems to do the trick and is just a soap really, nothing nasty in here. http://www.zymol.co.uk/zymolwheelcleaner22oz.aspx. But the mk1 Vantage wheels are rubbish and will need some attention after a few years no matter what.

Autoglym Clean Wheels - looks like another one to avoid.

AutoExpress 3 Stars, March 2010

The style and condition of wheels can have a major effect on the overall appearance of a car. Clean Wheels contains a scientifically balanced blend of acidic cleaners designed to rapidly dissolve brake dust and contaminants from most wheel types.

the paint on the hubs of the brake discs will come off if you use wonder wheels or similar on them and be rusty within weeks, its not a warranty thing

get the dealer to hammerite them (smooth silver) and then just use soap n water on your wheels

this is a common issue on Lotus too, with discs/hubs rusting within weeks when people use heavy duty wheel cleaner frown
