Just received the new Top Gear mag. The new Jaguar CX16 looks like it could provide some stiff competition to the likes of Porsche and Aston. Any thoughts?

Bored are we Roberto ??

Lying there with that leg horizontal, bandages around the knee, eh ?

Still a bit delirious, believing a new Jag is going to give an Aston a run for its money, eh ?

Molly, please take the Top Gear Mag, roll it up and impact it on his leg smile

I can't really see it troubling the new 991. But I think it will take away a few sales from the V8V.

If it's spec sheet is to be believed (which I don't), it will be more powerful, faster, way more economical, and cheaper. Whilst it's not as good looking (or no doubt as nice sounding) as the Aston, it looks like it could provide tough competition.

I much prefer Evo magazine, takes days to read unlike the TG rag. Your presumptions by the way are spot on. Historically as a family we owned Jags. As an 18 year old I had the use of a V12E.Type. The company is no longer British so it would not be for me.
I was just interested to hear some views.

I quite fancy it I must say. Aston need to get a move on with the next versions, at 50k this will certainly hurt Vantage sales.

Perhaps its a female point of view but I watched the video on the PH Home page, read the comments re it looking nothing like an Aston ( yeah right).

Its a beautiful car, but when buying my 1st V8V my other half had an XK and said he would buy me an XKR convertible. I looked at both but, to me, no disrespect to Jag, Aston ownership was the pinnacle. No logic but two words said it all to me. 'Aston Martin'.

Shallow maybe, but I believe those two words still mean something special, and the cars deliver as well.

Traditionally we always had a Jaguar or an Aston (sometimes both) in the family. I've got a Jag now and my father recently sold his Jag to buy something expensive (he hasn't decided what yet).

I would buy this CX16 if it ever became a reality, but Jaguar do have this propensity for releasing fabulous concept cars that they have no intention of ever putting into production.

With you on Evo > Top Gear. Evo is the only car magazine I read.

What does make me laugh is how a lot of people criticise Aston for so called 'lazy' designs, yet when Jag bring out a car that looks like it has been heavily influenced by Aston, it is somehow seen as fresh and modern.

The majority of the time it wont even be any faster than a V8V, only when the KERS is activated it will give it a run for it's money. So presumably, unless you are on a road which requires a lot of heavy braking, it will soon run out. Also, I would bet that by the time it is specced up, it will cost a damn sight more than £50k.

I'm not a fan of the gearbox either. 8 speed is just one too many. The line should be drawn at 7.

I think a used V8V would be where my £50k would be going.

That's a shame, as I think the subtext here was that Rob had already got a deposit down on one! He's probably on the web to interflora now given that he's bed-ridden.
Did I get it right this time?

Well you know what I think of Jags......mostly driven by poor people who can't afford, or , don't have the good taste to buy an Aston

Both jags and poor people are on my list .......ask the Jock.....by the way Mr Jockman I'm heading up to your neck of the woods on Friday.....Glasgow to pick up a new wee car

I love the R32. But I love my little GTI even more smile Except for the stupid iPod connection that is ranting

The R32's sound great, and the 4 wheel drive must come in pretty useful during the winter months. Is it DSG or manual?

That car - as specced - ain't selling for £50,000.

KERS?
Eight speed autobox with integrated hybrid
Carbon fibre all over the shop
£50k
By way of comparison the carbon fibre bonnet on a DBS is what £6,000?

For my next trick, Megan Fox and Kylie Minogue have a mud fight over which one gets to go on a date with me....

it will be interesting to see just how close to £50k the actual price is. I feel it will be a tad more

yes

Reminds me of the V8V pre-launch marketing.

Still, looks stunning and will certainly steal both Porsche and AM sales.

Technically it will knock the equivalent AM in to a cocked hat (like the XKR does now)
BUT that only works if you buy with your head wink

ETA I came close to buying 5.0XKR convertible and if I couldn't afford an AM I'd look at the Jag.

Personally I think it looks nice but it's no Aston, not by a long shot. Only advantage is it'll be half the price of an equivalent AM. But beauty is in the eye of the beholder...
