Now, you'll be very surprised to hear this no doubt, but I actually thought the AM satnav in my V8V was pretty good! Mine had the updated discs so had full postcode search, decent lane warnings etc. However, it has now broken.

Currently, the satnav starts up ok, most of the time I can set a destination, it will calculate a route for me. However, within a short distance of driving the map will disappear completely, leaving the screen a blank grey. Weirdly, if I move the screen one notch in any direction, the map will reappear temporarily. Now though, it is lacking the routing information (i.e. it shows the roads, but not the yellow arrows showing my route), and if I try to recalculate the route it gives me an error message (something along the lines of 'unable to calculate your route, if you move your car, or your destination slightly this may help'). Further, it will only remain momentarily before going a blank grey again. All very odd, and not at all usable.

I have no idea what caused this (it was working fine a couple of months ago - it's simply taken me this long to get around to posting about it) and I would hope that I'd be able to fix it simply by resetting the system, if there is a way to do this. So - is there? Any suggestions for fixes? Try and save the one remaining driver of Astons that doesn't hate their sat nav!

All help appreciated, thanks in advance.
Ben

PS - I did search for this, but funnily enough every topic mentioning 'SatNav' I could find was just people complaining about it smile

Suggests it's losing the GPS signal and/or has a lose connection at the back of the screen. I'd check the connectors on the screen and the DVD unit.

Mine does the same - will work for a while, then blank screen for the map - HOWEVER, when coming up to a junction, the directional small-scale map will appear and tell you where you need to go so you don't get lost technically. Also if switched off and then on again, works fine.

It's as if my MY2006 system isn't fully compatible with the 2010 discs..?

Off topic warning.
You should worry. We rented a Volvo a couple of years ago that had the same satnav in it.
1 mile from every direction it would bomb and then relocate itself to Sweden.... You had frequently passed the intended direction by the time you'd reset it to the UK. Strange how it seemed quite happy to continue to draw a map with you crossing rivers (without roads) when presumably it knew exectly where it was.
Although quite funny the 1st 5 times it got a bit tedious after!

Mine does exactly the same with the update disc,it loads the destination and it runs for about an hour then screen goes grey.I have given up gone back to 5 figure post codes and take a map. What is odd is that when Mikey K gave me the disc it worked fine for about 6 months before starting playing up.

I think the Sat nav is awful.

A great mod would be a tom tom stuck in where the screen is.

Since May 2011 all new Aston Martins are fitted with Garmin Satnavs.

Have you tried putting the original discs back in? Does it work ok?

Are the updated ones purchased originals or backups?

Try the 2009 SatNav disc instead if you can get hold of one. Mine has been running fine with this version since I swapped out the original DVD.

p.s. I don't hate the system either, I've seen a lot worse.

Got me thinking... if you could remove he screen and install the latest thin Tom Tom . Wire up the power you would be ready to go. You could have a switch discreetly in the cabin for on and off. If you needed to open the dash flap just select Sat nav as you would normally.
Just noticed that the TomTom Via with 12 months Live included is battering the Garmins under review.

Surprising, as the Garmins are perceived as the superior of the 2 smile

My Garmin nuvi 2460 with voice control should solve the short arm problem.

Just a thought, off topic ish.

I have cracked the video interafce to enable the fitment of a parking camera system. It shouldn't be too much of a mission to add a Navigation computer, Alpine NVE-099 comes to mind, and then work this off a remote control. you would still need to operate the screen tilt as normal, but once up then you would have Alpine nav and poss camera input. I have a spare Alpine Nav unit now so will need to have a play.

Yes Tony, you are quite right. On the early DB9's there was a screen saver option. I found it by accident one day, when I thought I had broken it following the fitment of an Ipod kit. Spent hours fault finding on the fibre optic MOST system, only to get told 'oh, didn't you know it had a screen saver', by an old sage of a mechanic. rolleyes

All the best,

James @ Paralight

ps I have now jumped ship and gone off to work for someone else, still got Astonitis, but now for www.trackaphone.com

Vergis - Correction wrong model number. My new Garmin is a Nuvi 3790 with Premium Traffic and Voice Activation, which works very well. Admittedly I tend to use the new unit for planning purposes only as I quite like the AM GPS updated with a 2010 Volvo Disc

A better solution would be an iPhone dock so you could charge the phone and then choose your SatNav software of choice. it also sounds easier to do as the iPhone has a video out and the whole kits is thinner, smaller than a conventional SatNav.

I had problems getting a GPS lock on an iPhone nicely mounted on my V8VR fascia which drove me (a) wild when trying to get somewhere, and (b) to get updated discs for the inbuilt SatNav. Seemed to be much worse in wet weather, and I suspect the Aston windscreen is metallised, causing the GPS reception problem. I then discovered the Aston/Volvo SatNav was not nearly as bad as I had first thought.
