Just giving my V8V a pre-service inspection (as one does!) and noticed the alternator and crankshaft pulleys are really rusty. In fact, the entire surface of the crankshaft pulley that's visible is coated in rust.
Is this normal? Car's only 15 months old. I guess if these items are unpainted forged steel then they're bound to have a coating of rust on them. Just quite surprised to see it in an otherwise pretty immaculate engine bay!

They look that from new as well.... Doesnt look nice, but is what it is. Dont think anyone has managed to argue a warranty claim, and the replacement part would rust in the same manner.

mine is the same in a 2 year old car, was going to complain when it is next serviced but it appears that could be wasted effort; will probably try though as it is not pretty frown

Metioned it to the service manager when I dropped my car off this week - he dais it's perfectly normal and like that on all of them. So doubt there's anythign that can be done about it.

Simple solution. Spray the engine with WD40. I have would you believe a 8 year old Toyota Hilux. The poor thing is subjected to all manner of abuse. Lift the bonnet the engine and components look lke new! I will treat my V8S in exactly the same way assuming that I ever leave dirt on long enough to cause a problem! Sorry !
To clean the engine compartment you could use Gunk, it is effective but a bit smelly. Try Muc Off. Then loads of WD which smells quite nice.

I'm curious. Doesn't this attract more dirt to stick the engine or make the parts greasy and difficult to work with?

The heat from the engine will burn off any residual oil leaving a shiny film on all the components. Honestly I am quite proud to show people my Hilux engine. I have even driven her threw flood water that came to the bonnet with the headlights submerged, still cleans up a treat.
