Hi

I have 3 mm left on brake pads aparently, and Aston have advised they need replacing.

I was planning on waiting for the warning light - comments?

Thanks
James

If the light comes on you will need to replace the sensors as well.
Keep an eye on them and do them before the sensor comes on. IMHO

the sensors are pretty reasonable probably better value than the pad material if you change too early, Rick worked out on my last service a monetary value on what I had left on my fronts

IIRC
Sensors £20 each
Pads £240 fronts only
Parts only

I went for EBC pads on the front on somebody's recommendation - wish I'd stuck with the OEM ones now, 500 miles down the line and they're still squealing, it's doing my head in rolleyes

Red stuff. Speaking to Rick after I'd bought them, he said other customers had the same issue with the red pads too.

In their defence, they seem to produce a little less brake dust - but only about 20% less I'd say.

Should've gone with Porterfield R4-S as I recommended earlier on the forum.

If you get brake pads that are not OEM, do you have to inform your insurance company ?

I dont think so, not for consumable parts ...people fit alternative same size tyres and its usually not an issue ..

well of course unless you did something really silly and had an accident with others injured then non OE recommended parts do become a big problem...people have gone to prison for that

as for the pads, the OE pads are Pagid RS4-2-2, often considered an upgrade by many enthusiasts, nothing at all wrong with them...if anyone really does find a brake pad that dosent give off dust, then patent it quickly smile

//personally I went for the easier option; have matt grey wheels, so they always look the same, clean or dirty smile

+1 & coating the inside & outside of the wheel with decent polish also helps

I don't know where this information comes from although I have seen many people on the forums mention Pagid. I replaced the OEM (i.e. factory) pads on my Vantage myself, and I can assure you that they had the Brembo logo stamped on the backing plate.

maybe there are alternative sources, the ones I have on my car are Pagid ...or maybe Aston changed suppliers over the last few years as I havnt fitted any for at least 3 years now

maybe someone like Rick @ DMS can comment as to what is the latest supplied as OE from Aston

The "easiest" option is CCM ! No mess, no dust.

When you can scrub off 70mph in about 4 car lengths you don't find it embarrassing (note: not measured it, an estimate etc.)

isnt the increased braking also down to having sticky tyres though too ? thats what I found with my old car...on regular tyres, all the super dooper big brakes did was make it easier to lock up sooner...you need the sticky tyres too to use them fully...which of course a V12V comes with smile

Yes, agreed. It would be interesting to see what would happen on standard V8 rubber (I know that's not possible as the wheels won't fit) to see what is down to brakes and what to tyres.

I suspect (and found on other cars) that the limit is mostly tyres...for a few laps of a track anyway...then brakes becomes the issue..and bigger/better ventilated brakes just meant they lasted longer at repeated 150-50mph stops ..usually I got knackered before the car wink

the carbon setup on the V12V though is going to be more than even the road legal trackday tyres can cope with, I reckon you could run full slicks and not have a problem...surely thats the point, to have the ultimate brakes smile
