Hi,
My AMV8 due for it's MOT.
Any advice where to take it in the Leeds area rather than the main dealer with the prices they charge.
I don't do many miles in it (sorry but yes it is a garage Queen!!) should I get it serviced every year? Or do it based on mileage?
Cheers.

Sounds like mine and even though the mileage is low I will still be getting it serviced every year. It is now due a 4 year/40000mile service and MOT and I am taking it to Rick at DMS, Derby.
It's a bit of a hike for me from Surrey but all the feedback on this forum about DMS is so good it has to be worth it and I get to spend some time with family in the area.

You’re suggesting that the OP drives his car from Leeds to Derby for an MOT !!! Are you mad !! I'm sure there are plenty of MOT stations in Leeds ...try goggling it......use one that only MOT's and does not offer repair services.....they then don't have a reason to fail it

Very sensible not to have your car MOT'd at a main dealer......they always seem to find something wrong with the car they can charge for.

With regard to the service.....yes you should have it serviced once a year if you want to retain its value

Try asking JCT for a discount based on the fact the car is very low mileage - I think you will be surprised. Its amazing what you get if you are prepared to ask for it...

If it's just MOT then go to moneysavingexpert as they have list of MOT centres where they don't do any remedial work i.e. just testing centres.

If it's service as well, then take it to Rick @ DMS - I'm in Leeds and it's where I took mine.

I've used Exhaust Discount in Leeds for MOTs on various cars. I have found them to be cheery and straightforward. If you happen to work in the city centre they are an easy walk away.

Not completely mad, the OP mentioned both MOT and service so I thought I would try to be helpful.

Your response seems so out of character I will refrain from any personal retaliation.

Would you have your shoes re-heeled if you didn't wear them?

No. Neither would I.

I have always serviced my cars on mileage and had no problems as a result either mechanically or in selling them.

No potential buyer who has any mechanical knowledge whatsoever would be put off.

Of course, that does leave one or two others out there.....

Anybody can do an MOT obviously but as said elsewhere, go over to Rick at Derby Motor Services for any work.

I would not be recommending service intervals purely on a mileage basis with an Aston Martin.

Obviously doesn't know me ! And as for the comment that residuals are not affected by having your Aston serviced purly on a millage is just plain daft ......Astons should be serviced at least once a year if you to preserve it's value

Agreed - even if you dont see the value in it, others will and dealers certainly will. Not servicing your car in accordance with the manufacturers schedule is a recipe for extra depreciation. Its far cheaper in the long run to jsut get it serviced.

So if you do 2500 miles/year, you'd service your Aston every 4 years? I certainly wouldn't buy a car from you and I'm not as stupid as you might think smile

Thanks for the threads, some really useful tips.
My first experience of taking my baby in to a garage so a tad wary!!
Like the idea of a garage that doesn't do remedials. I suppose anybody can check a car for an MOT? Doesn't need to be AM. I intend to keep the car for many years so residual value not such an issue for me. The car has done 37k and I will do 1.5k a year (don't laugh!!). So that was the reason the advice seems excessive.
What should I expect to pay for the next service?
Thanks again been really useful!!

There is a school of thought which would suggest that a car of this stature that only does 1.5k pa has MORE reason to be serviced regularly than a daily drive one.

As Michael has noted, the MOT requirement need not be a specialist area BUT best to use a garage you trust professionally and have used before. The first oil fingerprint on your leather seat will verify this point !

As for service pricing, depends which one it is and who you use. Specialists tend to be cheaper. Some dealers will negotiate, some will not. Offer to take your own oil (a la Mr Gould). Some owners insist on the AM stamp in their service book. All depends on your profile. Speak to Rick smile

They'll be plenty who will.

I've got an SL320 Mercedes that does about 3,000 a year and yes, when it's done 9,000 miles I get it serviced.

What do you think is happening when the car is just sitting in the garage?

Please tell me. I'd like to know.

ok well a couple of points....first of all I would agree that an SL320 with a value of perhaps 12-15k might not be affected value wise by not having it serviced, but that is not the case with the V8V

I think there is some confusion between if the car "needs" a service after 2.5k miles and whether one should have it serviced to maintain its residual value are quite different. I would agree with you, the car probably doesn’t need a service but if you want to maintain its value then you need that little stamp in the book
