Hello all,

I'm off next week for a 5 day jaunt up from London to the Lakes, then onto Edinburgh, and then back down South taking in some of our Island's best roads along the way. The girlfriend thinks we'll be taking the shortest route, so will need to manage that somehow...

Anyway, having recently had my bonnet, bumper and front wings repainted due to stone chip damage, I'm keen to keep it this way if possible and wondering if they are any 'temporary' solutions to protect from stone chips, as I've run out of time to get the permanent film fitted, unfortunately.

Only options I have managed to find are to cover the front of the car blue 3M tape (no point in having a beautiful car of you're going to cover it in tape!) or this cling film type stuff: http://www.griotsgarage.com/product/car+maintenanc... which unfortunately won't arrive from the US in time.

Any other ideas / experience appreciated.

Cheer,
Adam

I covered 400 miles on mixed roads at the weekend with my newly painted front end.
No protection, just doubled the distance when following other vehicles. Nothing other than a few bugs on the paintwork.

If it's good paint you'll be OK! Not a mark on my newly painted front end after a 'spirited' trip to Spa Francorchamps and then the Le Mans 24 a week later.

For the money the film costs, I'd rather have the front end re-done every 2 years or so; the film leaves a line where it ends and on lighter coloured cars seems to turn yellow...

Full 3M venture shield pack for a V12V is £600 fitted and it is UV stable.
Bumper, bonnet & wing (not ot mentoin mirrors, sills and rear arches) would cost a load more to get painted and would always raise the suspicion it had been repaired.

I used to hate the stuff but my V8VR had it on from the previous owner and it works really well. I will be putting it on my new car.

Sound advice , i did 5 countries in 6 days around europe , 250 ltrs of fuel later , no stone chips , still the roads in europe make the uk look silly.

You should be fine as long as you are going up to the highlands .

Adam,
I saw some protective film in the US this past week. Pep Boys I think. It was like a large roll of cling film.

I believe this stuff is for insects, not necessarily as protection against stone chips.
