Has anyone found some way of stopping the junk AM wheel centres on the V8V corroding from the edges?
I had new ones fitted under warranty, but two years later they look like crap.
Looking at how they're made, it's a stamped piece of ali with a plastic film on top. These are then stuck onto some plastic centres that clip into the wheel.
The plastic film does not overlap the edge as I guess they are probably stamped out of sheet so clearly water gets in between the ali and the protective film and starts the corrosion.
I was considering getting a new set, pulling them apart and then giving them a good coating of laquer around the back (oh er misses) and onto the film to try and prevent that.
Anyone done anything else more permanent/effective?

Rick got some and replaced them on my 9 when it was in for service last. As said, not very exensive at all and made a world of difference to the look of the wheels...

My young un has the old ones stuck to his poster boards in his bedroom now smile

Hey we're not all made of money you know!

Yeah ok, but at some point between looking great and looking like crap they look merely "OK".
Maybe I'll just change them every time I check the oil! smile

Careful if you're using any kind of wheel cleaner fluid - it attacks the plastic coating on the badges. That might be why they're not lasting.

Exactly the same thing happens with both Mercedes and BMW centre caps although it generally spreads to the entire wheel on those marques!

One I prepared earlier

Peter - there was a link to the specific ebay site posted a couple of months ago. It might even have been Michael that helpfully posted it, but I´m sure you can google it.

Toofastforme and Steve B are completely correct about the cleaning agents you need to watch out for. If it says Autoglym, Swisswax, inter alia you will be fine, but avoid any of the cheap wheel cleaners.

Paddy does an excellent write up on the F&Qs smile

As had been said, don't use corrosive wheel cleaners - most are. And make sure your rims are well waxed along with the centers.

On a slightly more practical note, how do you get the old ones off. Do you need to remove the wheels?

its charged out at 4 hours per wheel to remove, or you could just flick them out from the back smile NRS

The best way to get the old ones off without marking the alloys is to puncture the wheel centre with a screwdriver about half an inch from the edge......there is a little slot if you look closely but it's more satisfying to shove your screwdriver through the offending little bugger

easiest way without removing wheels is to use a rubber sucker, lick it, stick it and pull
